Ventless gas/propane fireplaces??? Thoughts anyone??

Quote:
No mine is not vented into anything. It's a large ventless natural gas fireplace. In fact the cage sits in a corner beside the fireplace. I've had both the fireplace and the keets for 7 years.

I did alot of research and the fumes is what people are complaining about more than the residue it gives off on the walls for you to scrub.

I do not know what we can do when the electric goes off and having no heat. The ventless sounds like a great idea but the risks outweighs more than the electric fireplace.

1. Seems it needs to be properly installed so have your local heating/cooling company do that they have the liability that way. Probably just a service call charge $50-$100?

2. Get an Carbon Monoxide sensor installed in your home. The room it will be in especially.

3. It needs to be used in a good sized room not a tiny room.

This link below talks about why you have to much carbon monoxide being produced. Thats why I would have it installed and adjusted by a professional.

This is from 1998 but they are still around so it must be safe enough to still be selling them.

Some good information here I hope you get the answers you are looking for to make your decision. Tons of info out there just google "safety ventless gas heaters".

I know you wanna stay warm....our power has went out 2 times in a month and it get pretty darn cold this time a year. With one of these you would not have that problem either.

Good luck!

I haven't taken the time to read the other replies, but that having been said, here's my experience with them:

In my former house, we had two of them installed. They are the fireplace type, with mantels, that look like a real fireplace but are propane. I absolutely LOVED them!! They hooked up to our existing propane tank, but we had to have new lines installed leading from the fireplaces to the existing tank of course. I lived in Massachusetts at the time, and the state regulations required a safety inspection and Carbon Monoxide alarms to be installed in each room where the fireplaces were. No big deal. They are extremely efficient. One of them, the more expensive one, had a remote control, and I absolutely loved setting the table for dinner and clicking on the fireplace from the table. The larger one would blow you out as far as heat goes, we always had to keep it on low. The other one was in a larger space and was not overpowering.

I would highly recommend them. I miss them a lot. An added bonus was that we had a nice heat and light source during power outages. Hope that helps!

We have one in every room of our house, we have had them 10 years. They do an excellent job and are safe. We made sure to put carbon monoxide detectors in the livingroom and bedrooms and so far so good. My sister the propane version of these heaters and has no problems either. Make SURE you have someone from the gas company come and run your plumbing , you don't want Joe Blow doing it wrong and killing you all.

I think reason so many different results, in older homes, they are not as air tight as some of the newer homes. So i think alot depends on how air tight the house is.

Well I got an older home but used the first floor that we used the most. Most of my family are DIYers.

We have carbon monoxide detectors down the basement where the furnace is...ours is city gas, not propane.

Maybe they did improve the shut off, but I hate to see any reside coming off from it and don't like the idea of having "sooty" walls. I've got too many family pictures hanging up on the walls.
