Very Best Brown egg layers { Not Hybirds }

what is the very best Non Hybirds Brown egg laying hens

The short answer is: RIRs and Plymouth Rocks
There are other factors that may change your decision though. temperature range, feed-to-egg conversion, temperment, and ease of confinement are important things to consider.

excellent username by the way

Production wise.....BPR, NHR, RIR, australorps...
{Barred Plymouth Rock, New Hampshire Red, Rhode Island Red (which in most commercial hatcheries is actually a production red)}

I find that Barred Rocks lay smaller, paler eggs than the Production Reds, and Australorps are somewhere in the middle with a slightly pink/purple egg, but your mileage may vary. I've no experience with true RIRs.

EDT: Also, eggs per year: PBR = 280, NHR = 280, Production Red = 280, RIR = 260, Australorp = 250.

I really like Production red hens, but Australorps have the sweetest temperament of the above and are the hens I would recommend to a first-timer.

Greetings and welcome to BYC! So glad you joined us. There's a wealth of info, knowledge and experience shared in the multitude of threads. The base question you asked is open to real subjective answers and since there are so many brown egg layers, the answers will be many and varied. I suggest you compare and choose what works bst for your situation. https://www.backyardchickens.com/forums/general-breed-discussions-faq.14/ There's also this PDF you can go over. www.albc-usa.org/documents/chickenbreedcomparison.pdf

Additionally, you should browse around and see what interesting stuff you can find. By all means post away when the desire strikes you, especially if you have questions (provide as much detail/info as possible and pictures truly help)... With all the great folks here, generally someone will respond in no time at all. Please make yourself at home!

Oh, if you haven't done so already, PLEASE put at least your general location in your profile. It could be very important if/when you ask for or offer help or advice. You know, climate issues and such. I recommend at least your state as most folks won't be able to figure out where if you put anything more specific (county, town, street, etc) by itself. Old folks like me :old will never remember & look there first. To add it, mouse hover over Account top right and a drop down will appear. Click on Personal Details and scan down. You'll see the spot for Location. Then go to the bottom and save changes. Thanks! Hope you enjoy the site!

I have a Speckled Sussex and she's my best layer. She lays almost every day, fairly consistently 5- 6 eggs a week. My Barred Plymouth Rock consistently lays only every other day, but her eggs are quite a bit bigger. So who is actually giving me more? :confused:
