I agree....let's focus on the happiness these muts bring us..I have some pure breds and some mutts and I love them all the same....there is too much to be sad over in this world..let's focus on that and be happy with what makes us happy..and don't let some Moron try and tell us what they think makes them upset. ok, so they don't like Mutts...that's fine. Don't have any!! simple as that!!

I think to some degree chickens are working animals like border collies and Australian cattle dogs. Those dog breeds are bred for their skill and performance and not conformation to a breed standard. Indeed breeders of border collies protested AKC recognition because they felt it would lead to a deterioration of the breed's working skills. Border collies are incredibly diverse in appearance. Chickens are raised for meat, eggs, and as pets. Any chicken that excels at one or more of those tasks is a good chicken as far as I'm concerned. I think the purebreds are beautiful and fascinating, but the overwhelming majority of chickens in this world are "mutts" and always have been. Most of us on BYC are fortunate enough to have the luxury of enjoying our chickens' personalities. In other parts of the world chicken eggs and meat remain an essential source of protein and I doubt hungry people care at all whether their dinner was bred pure!

In response to the original post...I think that is why there are special organization's and breeders clubs and forums for breeders to join/sell/and buy; for those enthusiast and like minded who want to socialize and talk only the genetics of so-called "pure" bred breeds and for those who want to be SURE to buy for that purpose ONLY. (which I think was very well pointed out where that word ("pure bred" )stands already here by several members! Way to go guys!) Then there is a forum for us "regular" folk who just love chickens, even those "ugly" cross-bred, "impure-bloodlines" that the original poster spoke that got his feathers all in a ruffle! Its called BACK YARD chickens! (hence the name) I think I do agree...ANY ONE and EVERY ONE needs to be on the up and up on what they are selling...I hate a liar...dont sell a Leghorn as an Aruacana (which is what happened to me! your customer will get upset, very much so! I was NOT happy to find my day old chicks grew to be white colored laying hens!!!! Not to mention flighty uncatchable birds unless you have a net and fast feet no matter how much you loved and played with them!!! Besides they cant get their money recouped when they resell!!!!

) People should do their research! Most definitely!
But dont knock those "mutts"!!! Or those people who buy or sell "mutts" as long as they are being honest about it. If you dont like what you read, I'm sure there is a place that fits your liking more. Thank God that my DH didnt want a pure bred.....and decided that me being a "mutt cross Italian/Hungarian/English/American Back Yard Chicken Enthusiast" was okay to fall in love with! We still love you though and accept you too....just dont hate!
