Rule number one - chickens resent having a pill forced into their beaks. Rule number two - they don't get a vote. Stuff the pill into their beaks.

Diluting an antibiotic or a dose of calcium by dissolving it in water, unless it's a tiny amount and can be gotten all down the chicken's throat, just dilutes the dose and slows or prevents the effectiveness of the med.

Hi again! I am happy to report that Penny is still alive and seems to be doing better. She is eating and drinking and today, she just pooped out this. It appears to be a yoke but I'm not sure. It was about the size of a golf ball. Is this a good thing? I've never seen this before and I'm not sure what to make of it. I'm still giving her 1 750 mg Tums per day and am adding sugar to her water.

The yellow poop is not yolk. Cut into it. See what it looks like inside. I think it's a pus ball from salpingitis, an infection in the oviduct.

This is what it looks like inside. I've had chickens with lash eggs before and they didn't really look like this but then again, I've never seen this before. Does this look like one of those puss balls?

Can you describe the texture of it? Salpingitis has cheesy consistency. I confess to a problem "reading" photos, mainly because they are two dimensional, and I use all my senses when trying to identify the nature of things - three dimensional sight, smell, and touch. Those three are not available to me here when viewing photos, making appraisal of a photo difficult.

If this isn't salpingitis, it has a yellow tinge that is concerning. It can be either reproductive in nature or a sign of liver disease.

Hopefully, others will be along who don't suffer the same limitations as I do.

I agree with @azygous. It looks like either lash egg material (pus) or very yellow urates. Neither is great. I had an Australorp once who had what I thought were thick, yellowy urates that turned out later to be lash material.

If it is lash, it isn't as hard as I normally see it. I wonder if it's a sign early reproductive infection - but is it early enough to treat is the question.

I have put pre-biotics and pro-biotics in her water but I will put some sugar in it as well. She really hated me putting the crushed Tums down her throat. Could I dissolve it in water then give her that? I don't know if it has the same effectiveness as giving her the powder.
I have given my girls caltrate and if you can get some of that, it may be easier than crushed tums, because the pill is a friendlier shape to swallow whole.

I just sit them on my lap facing out, use my left arm to secure the body against me, take my left hand and go behind the neck, left of the face, and under, lightly grab the wattles and when they try to move their head up and away (because they’re like “what are you doing, lady!?), the beak opens (lower beak is held still by the wattle hand) and I pop the pill in with my right hand and down the hatch! It’s super quick and easy (just have to be ready with the pill in your dominant hand).

Hope she feels better!!

I totally understand and I really appreciate your help. It has the consistency of a hard boiled egg yolk. It doesn't smell like anything that I can tell.
