Very worried

She is gone. I don't know yet what was wrong. The vet is doing an autopsy tonight to find out if it is something that I have to worry about for the other ducks. She appeared to have a widespread infection. I never saw any indication of it. She was fine yesterday or at least appeared to be.
Rest in peace my precious Veronica. I will miss you forever.

I am so very sorry, as I read this and came to the next page I was so hoping you had other news. I was shocked. They can hide things from us so well. Please let us know what the vet finds out.

Thank you.
I am feeling very guilty right now. I should have seen something sooner...........I just can't believe I missed this. I really hate myself right now.

Please don't, they hide their illnesses all to well that way they don't appear to be sick in the flock. This has probably happened to all of us who have had fowl for any length of time, You loved her and provided a wonderful home for her and I'm sure she knew that. We just have to keep on and continue to take care of the rest the best we can. It's very heartbreaking when we loose something we care about so much. Not many can understand how we can care about these animals the way we do, but they have never known them the way we have. Try to take comfort in this that she was very special and you did all you could to give her the best life possible.

Oh, no.

When we lost Neun last year, we had a necropsy done. She had egg yolk peritonitis. I asked the vet what I could have done differently and was told, "nothing." Ducks do hide illness very well, and it seems to me, especially the internal ailments such as infections. I pressed the issue with the vet, but apparently it is quite rare to be able to catch some things at all, or catch them in time to fix them. Hardware disease can be like that, too. I could not even talk about the loss for a while.

I hope and pray you will have a little time to go ahead and grieve. I am so sad to know she is gone. You said she may have been quite old. But that makes no difference when we lose a beloved.

I'm so sorry. You never know how much losing one affects you... I recently lost my Fred... It still hurts my heart when I think about her. I'm so so sorry.

Amiga, that is exactly what Veronica had. And I was told the same thing by the vet. She made me promise to lose the guilt. But I still feel that I know my pets so well normally that I should have done better. I am so angry at myself that she might have been in pain for a few days and I just didn't catch it. She was begging me to end her pain. Thankfully I didn't chose to do the selfish thing and try to "fix" her. The vet said that all I probably could have done was to make her more comfortable for a few days, but this would have won eventually.
The good news is that the others are in no danger. So the necropsy was very well worth it. At least I don't have to think the others could have gotten something from her.
Nickie- I am sorry for the loss of your Fred. It is so hard when we are so attached to them.
I will be okay. I just hate myself right now. I just wish I could have seen just a little something that would have made me know something was going on.

Thank you Miss Lydia for your kind words.
And thank you everyone else. It does help to know others understand.
