Another question: I have chicks at ages: 11 weeks, 9 weeks, and one-day-old. When should I start getting all of these ladies to the vet? Also, do I need to find a special type of vet?

You really don't need to take chickens to a vet routinely...they don't get yearly vaccines or anything. It would be good to go ahead and locate an avian/poultry vet in case of an emergency though.

I got mine an appointment for Saturday (they'll be about a week old). I just want a basic health check with the vet's recommendations for vacinations. They've had their Mareks vac, but there's another one that starts with a c that I'm a little concerned about. It might take a while to find a avian vet where you are; I was lucky to find one close to my place.

You might be able to locate an avian vet on your State's department of agriculture website.

They don't really need to go to the vet routinely like cats and dogs, but like someone stated before its a very good idea to know where an avian vet is when you have an emergency.
