Is the last method you mentioned basically scaring them out of broodiness?

Scaring them with a broom? I don't think it's scary enough to make her stop being broody, it just makes her stay away from the coop for a while.

Last night Dot was on the best and when I put my hand under her she screamed, so I took her out and dunked her in water. She came right back. Then I blocked off the nest box and she went to her roost. This morning she was brooding in front of the nest box so I dunked her in water and chased her away with a broom.

Oh she is! She gets more broody every time she gets on the nest!

County fair is coming up and I'm in 4-H. I can't show the Cochin chicks in a breeding pen (a roo and two pullets) because they were hatched after April 1. I can't show the four marshmallow hatched because they're hybrids. So The only thing I can show in is Barnyard flock, no restrictions to age, sex, or breed. It is a pen of two or three chickens and one pen per individual. I think I might show Night and Hawk. Mom can remember Hawks name now but she calls him Black Hawk. It's not terrible so I let her think that's his name.

Here are some recent pics of Hawk, he is quite handsome. (And he's for sale, I'll be sad to see him go)

I know, he's beautiful. He has started following me around lately, I'm not sure if he's waiting for a chance to attack or if he wants corn. I'm on the fence weather to keep him or not. I have to make room for the Cochin chicks but he's so hansome. He's not extremely freindly, hates to be caught. I can't catch him unless he's in the coop, I can't even herd him in like my other chickens. The best way to catch him is to lure him in.

Dot is still broody. When I take her out of the coop instead of going to the nest she goes to her roost. I thought that was wierd. Mom thinks she is sick because she isn't mean like last time she was broody. I saw her taking a dust bath under the lilac bush, usually she takes it somewhere else.
Who knows, I'll check her out tomorrow.

Blueberry (biggest, most mature Cochin chick) mated marshmallow today, I was suprised she let him. Hawk and almond have started trying to mate her too, but she just turns around and pecks them away. Marshmallow says there are too many boys around here.

The guy that was supposed to take the Cochin cockerels around this time hasn't contacted us. I'm going to ask dad to, he has his number. Those cockerels have got to go asap.

Please keep me updated on Dot!

Most days, you want to wring their necks!

Muffin had a goopy, bubbly eye yesterday, it scared me. Today it seems to be cleared up
So glad she's better today.

I wonder if she just got picked in the eye?
