Woke up this morning and went outside to release my babies outside and found that I didn't put the top back on my feed or it somehow blew off in the storm.40 lbs of feed is soaking wet.

A smart person would have put it in a building I guess, but I have always kept mine outside as I didn't want mice in my buildings.Live and learn.Oh Jamie ,we have our orders "no more bashing" Hard to believe we are ALL wrong and don't have a clue as what we are talking about but we have been told it is so. I guess some people feel it's ok for a kid of 13 to call people 30 times a day, day after day after being told no.

How is the rest of Virginia doing weather-wise? That week long stretch of 100+degrees days cost me eleven chickens. A meat bird who had been panting and wheezing was the first to go. She had crawled under the house for shade. The next morning I spent several minutes trying to remove cockerals from the baby pen. That afternoon I found six dead cockerals. Was it just the sun or did the "fight" with me make them use up too much of their reserves?

Who knows?

At any rate since then I've been more careful about topping off water containers twice a day. Instead of flopping loose plywood everywhere I want to try to make some shade frames. If the roosters and cockerals demand to sleep on top, they can just go ahead.

Speaking of cockerals, one is on the front porch raising heck. Better go see about him. Take care all!

I have been really lucky this summer with my birds. One thing that I haven't done is feed them corn as it builds heat in the body. I do alot of reading about chickens and alot of what I have read said not to feed corn nor scratch with corn in the summer. I am no expert on chickens by any means and I am learning everyday.

I have heard that, too. I need to find another treat (bribe) for when I pick up their eggs. Amy Nadine on the South Carolina thread said she makes a slightly fermented oat treat for her birds. Amy said she covers the whole oats in water and lets it sit for three days. My adult chickens ate the whole oats just fine, but the little ones were not thrilled.

I wonder where I could buy frozen green peas in bulk? I hear chickens and ducks go wild for them.

going to try and post a picture
