Hope all is well with everyone here in VA? Roanoke, Lynchburg, Bedford County got hit pretty hard. Lynchburg is still without power in many places, trees, power lines down. Horrible storm and just thankful we only lost trees! Power was out here for 4 hours and then the next day 4 more. Very, very lucky indeed! Take care all and hope you get power back soon. K3llyVA WOW, Arlington did get hit pretty bad, sorry to hear that.....

now they're saying that aep is hoping to have power restored to 95% of it's customers "by sometime sunday"... i'm betting i'll be one of those other 5%...

we were out for 3 days. it was over a hundred degrees all 3 days. a fox tried to take advantage of no night light but i got him. he managed to kill my little black cubalaya stag, though.

OMG Having withdrawal!! I am in Roanoke CIty and we still do not have power, lost it Friday night!! I am at the library now and finally can get online!!! I had to put my 3 week olds (almost 4 weeks old this week) out in the big girl coop the other night, we are sleeping in the basement and even though I was cleaning them 2 'x a day it was stinking! I put them in a kids playpen of sorts with my son's baseball net over it so they couldn't get out and the big girls couldn't get in. Ans I Have been worried something would get in and get them but so far so good, tonight might put them in cat carriers and in the coop so I know they are locked up good. Of course the power has to go out during a heat wave. Thankfully our neighbors with a portable generator let us hook up our fridge so we didn't loose our food. Glad to have a gas grill with side burner and all our camping supplies so I can still cook! Once my grandma's power came on yesterday my uncle brought over his generator that is more powerful so we could hook up the window unit for some coolness. And we were able to return the favor to the neighbor and let them hook up their window unit. The worst problem is the break ins. Either my husband or myself are at home at all times, It has been crazy, at least the police are patrolling like crazy, thought they were going to get me when I went out with the headlight to look up the coop last night!! Please don't shoot I am just taking care of my girls!! AEP Saying it won't be until Sat. before power is restored, ugh. To make it even worse figured I could take the kids to the pool during the day to cool off and the pool is closed cause it has no power (they lost it after the storm Sunday night!). Glad everyone seems to be doing well despite all the craziness. And it is a full moon!!

well, rural living has it's benefits... no worries of breakins here. the dogs would fix that in short order... but i work from home. nope ain't gonna happen. the generators making so much noise, and my office isn't on the a/c side of the house, so it's stuffy and headache-inducing. managed 4+ hours today. bleh. this is going to be one crappy paycheck.

but the chicks are still kickin' along. i've got 2/3 turkeys hatched waiting for their owner to come pick them up, and of 8 developing eggs, 7 red dorkings are in lockdown, 2 have pipped so far.

so it could be worse. well, it might get that way. we're going broke feeding the gennerator.

yeah just add up that gas bill and see how much cheaper electric is. my mom needed help years ago went 20 days without electric and man on radio said he would never say anything good about the good old days ever again he was hauling drinking water they brought in from outside in big tanks lucky for mom i brought her home with me.

well day 5 of no power has come and gone, and day 6 has begun (as of about 8pm)... and no end in sight yet.

i'm still heading to the christiansburg swap on saturday, if anyone wants anything i've got...

1 bantam RIR, pair of blue/splash wyandotte bantams, 4 white chicks (either rhode island or plymouth rocks i think), 1 black chick (australorp possibly?) - the ?? chicks came in "LF Pure" egg mix.
also some oegb chicks, a barred cochin cross, white cochin pullet (just started laying), pair of gold neck d'uccles, and lots of purebred dorkings (silver grey, red and colored). I'm thinning the flock to work on primarily my silver greys, roger tice reds (hatching now) and a couple extra pullets to keep for eggs & color genetics experimentation.

i may also bring an assortment of chicks, including a black ameraucana, color cross dorkings and possibly some bantam cochin chicks too. i've got way too many of them. LOL

Hi everyone,

Arlington County's a mess. So many trees down on people's houses and cars, giant branches everywhere. We were very lucky- no damage at all and got our power back yesterday. Threw out all the perishables in the fridge- that was painful, but took the opportunity to clean it out and now the inside looks like new!

We spent the night at a friend's house Saturday night, it was getting pretty miserable at our place. Charged our cell phones and checked email. Lots of folks in the DC area still don't have power, businesses included. Local Post Office was only selling stamps- system down, Target opened today and my daughter said it smelled bad, only one grocery store out of the 5 near us is open.

The storm was crazy- we knew it was coming from watching the weather online, but it was still something when it hit. The lightning looked blue and green!

At least I didn't have to worry about chickens- we are still working on changing the ordinances...

Hope everyone is else is doing well.
good luck try telling them going green with chicken's is good for the enviroment..If someone could breed a rooster with no crowing they would make a mint.
