Virginia

well, it was a good day, but LOOOONG! good to see Tony and Marcia and anyone else who's name i'm misplacing at the moment...

ended up, I got into Roanoke and had to stop by camping world to return something for my dad from when he passed thru on his way to texas last month.

got a call from hubby while I was there, he was in Vinton and needed help... a co-worker of mine had computer problems, and he fixed her machine for her, but now she couldn't log in to the work portal... so I headed over there to fix that problem (easier than trying to explain what was needed...) she got to see her first SQ bantam cochin ever! LOL AND gave me an electric pressure cooker for helping her out!

then we went and had dinner because I was too tired to cook, and just got home about 15 minutes ago.

The Virginia Poultry Breeders Association was my first show ever. I showed the following poultry with the following results:

  • Wheaten ameraucana cockerel – RV
  • Wheaten ameraucana pullet – BV
  • Blue wheaten ameraucana cockerel – BV
  • Black ameraucana pullet – RV
  • Black ameraucana cockerel – BB/BV
  • Cream legbar pullets – BB
  • Cream legbar cockerels – RV
  • Euskal oiloa (marraduna basque) – BB/BV

While I had the only cream legbars and euskal oiloa at the show, there was strong competition in the ameraucanas. So getting best in breed and best/reserve varieties in a very competitive class was a pleasant surprise. I had attended a show in Frederick, MD about 3-4 weeks ago and based on observations there, I felt that some of my birds might be competitive. But I never would have guessed that they would do this well. An exciting day for sure!

I was also able to talk with lots of folks about the cream legbars and EOs. There was a lot of interest. I also made a point of discussing the draft SOPs with the judge for both the cream legbars and EOs to gather comments and info to further establish the breeds and acceptance.

is there ANYONE in VA who wants to go to Knoxville (in 2 weeks)? I'm planning on just a day trip, though I am showing (Dorkings, blrw and blue mottled cochins) and as long as I don't make champion row, I won't need to stay till sunday. and I SERIOUSLY doubt my dorks will make champion row. the breed needs way more work to get up to full SOP size. the other varieties are not recognized, so not a problem there. LOL
my problem is, driving solo, I just can't stay awake! tho if i have someone to talk to, it's a totally different story. LOL

and it'd be nice to split the gas money too. LOL

please help!

It is 29 degrees at 11:00 am in my part of Fairfax County. My chicks are now 7 weeks old, and they have been in their unheated coop for about two weeks. I was worried, but I guess all those feathers are keeping them well insulated. They are out in their run, happily scratching away.

With the wind it had to be in the mid teens here early this morning. It's warmed up to low 30's so far. Thankfully no problems with my chicks or hens so far from the cold weather, other then one frozen chicken waterer that the heater broke on.

15 degrees last night. no frostbite. no need for vaseline. even got a couple eggs this morning. cubalayas are awesome!!!
Ok - Jimmy ,there you go bragging again LOL - just kidding - we only got down to about 18 in the south. Its been a slow egg season with a very heavy molt this year . if it wasn't for the New Del pullets I would be almost eggless. Getting only 2>4 day
with 20 Hen/pullets LOL
