Ok - Jimmy ,there you go bragging again LOL - just kidding - we only got down to about 18 in the south. Its been a slow egg season with a very heavy molt this year . if it wasn't for the New Del pullets I would be almost eggless. Getting only 2>4 day
with 20 Hen/pullets LOL
I feel your pain! I, too, have had a heavy late molt with 4-7 eggs per day with 20 laying hens. Just as you indicated, if not for the new pullets, this number would be questionable.

Looks like I may be moving (back) to the DC area and am hoping to find get some help from you all. I used to live in NoVA, Fairfax County, but moved to FL about 5+ years ago. In the meantime, I've gotten into beekeeping, aquaponics, fairly intensive gardening, and now quail (I would love a couple chickens, too, but can't where I am.) Anyone have any suggestions for an area close enough to commute into DC (hubby works downtown) that would also allow me to continue or expand my micro farming passions? I would really like an area that allows all these things without it being a code enforcement nightmare. Thanks for ANY info!

Hi,

I live in northern Loudoun County and commute into Rockville, MD. many folks that live near me commute into DC. The commute is not bad since I ride the MARC train. The train starts as far out as Martinsburg, WV and goes all the way into DC Union Station. As of August, I have commuted on the train for over 20 years. No restrictions on chickens or other livestock in most places here. If you choose to live in a development, though, all bets are off. HOAs can be painful.

Good luck!

I will NOT live in an HOA (again.) Been there. Done that. And that was before I gardened and such. I can't imagine how painful that would be now. (Actually, yes I can.) Thanks for the info and tip on the MARC train. I'll look up the line and see what's where.

purcelville va?

I giuess I should be thrilled with my 3-6 eggs a day, then, huh? I keep doing stupid things though like putting them in my pockets and then smashing them. not the girls fault.
I was in a meeting at work the other day and I was still wearing my jacket. I looked down and there was all this goo seeping through the whole front of my coat...oops.

We have an HOA but it is only for road mantenance really. and that is pretty darn necessary. our "subdivision" only has gravel roads and they wash out all the time.

our last HOA was a nightmare. they liked us because we always went above and beyond but that was before we got into chickens.they'd hate us now.
