Virginia

Hello fellow Virginian! I'm pretty new to chickens and this forum
..by pretty new, I mean I'm in the infant stages of chicken husbandry.

I would like to try to hatch a few eggs and am wondering if anyone has or knows of someone with silkie eggs within an hour of the Richmond area. I ended up with three batches of TSC chicks because I kept trying to find a silkie but couldn't resist picking out chicks even when they didn't have any!

So, just a few eggs to attempt would be fun, educational and might actually get me the chick I want!

Hi there from the Shenandoah mountains in Page County! My fiancé, 3 & 7 year old boys, Chocolate Lab Bailey and I relocated here from Northern VA last summer and we are loving it! We started on our chicken adventure in late February with 6 straight run Red Rangers from TSC. Unfortunately, Spartacus is the lone roo left out of the bunch after various predator/neighbor dog attacks and one heart attack (we think...). We lost 5 chickens in less than 2 weeks after raising happy, healthy birds for over 2 months :(
Yesterday I received an order of 16 day old pullets from McMurray Hatchery. All my girls were bright eyed and peeping when I picked them up at the PO. We got
3 RIR
3 BO
3 Black Star
3 Araucana
3 Barred Rock
1 Free exotic-I'm pretty sure it's a Cochin
I started all this chicken craziness to educate my boys and have fresh eggs... hundreds of dollars and countless hours of labor later,(thanks, honey!) we will have a good sized flock and the Ft Knox of chicken houses/runs to prevent any more losses. It's nice to be in the company of other chicken fanatics on here!

. I'm new to this site, but not new to keeping chickens. I wish you both good luck and hope you enjoy your chickens! Some of the most rewarding experiences have come from my chickens.

Sounds like a good mix you got there! Hope everything turns out the way you ordered them and no more dog attacks. Dog attacks are no fun, especially the aftermath of dealing with the neighbors...

I have great news... well for me at least... my chickens were smart enough to drink from the nipple watering system.

not that I had any doubt. but its still cool to see them figuring things out. now I'm almost done with my pvc chicken run I'm making so I can actually get in there and act like a chicken with them.

You're gonna use the water nipples, take dirt baths and lay eggs? Have someone take pics. LOL
