for another good hatch.

at least these eggs weren't subjected to possibly being partially frozen before collection, then left to sit for up to a month (or more for some of them) before incubation. LOL (but i did get 14 healthy chicks from that mess.)

so here's hoping for another 15 or so... then there's the 60+ i set that's due 10 days later... or the 10 more sfh eggs i set a few days ago... oh yeah and the 36+ bantam cochins that's due to come in a week from monday...

oh, and 6 mixed bantams were calling my name at TSC today too... and my sandhill preservation order (25+ dorkings) is due april 1.

um... am i crazy?

oh! and did i mention i'm getting 2 pairs of sfh on tuesday?

Is ANYBODY having a swap in the next 3 weeks?
roanoke tsc says their first swap will be the 3rd saturday starting this month.

ALSO! i talked to the manager at the roanoke/troutville southern states, she wants to set up a monthly swap too. probably the 4th saturday (i hope, my 2nd sat's are spoken for).

so that'll give us 3 a month in close driving distance! (to me at least

This is a repost from my post in the new member introduction area to introduce myself specifically to Virginia members and to ask if anyone is interested in going in together on chicks from Southern States in Henrico this week:

I am new to chickens, we just bought 2 each of Easter egger, barred rock, buff orpington, and black australorp pullets (hopefully!). They are all under ten days old. We will keep them for eggs and as pets. We also have horses and a cat (indoor only). We are really excited about our new chicks! We have several reference books from the library, but I would love suggestions on your favorite books on keeping chickens.

On a somewhat related note, Southern States on West Broad in Henrico has a six chick minimum purchase. This Thursday they are getting in golden wyandottes, partridge rocks, Easter eggers, and brown leghorns. Pullets, I believe, and can call to confirm. I would love to get one or two golden wyandottes, but do not want to buy six more chicks. If anyone lives nearby who is interested in going in together please let me know. They are running a special where if you buy a 50lb bag of chick starter you get 6 chicks free, or buy 10 bags and get 100 free. The starter is $15.50 per bag or the chicks are 6 for $15. I can even get there by noon or so Thursday so they are not in the store being handled by other customers very long. If this is the wrong section to post this, I apologize.

I have enjoyed reading all of the useful information on this site and am looking forward to continuing to learn from the others who post here!
