Ok, catching up on Winter... Lots of posts!

I love my Harliquen Quail, just had two failed hatch attempts (failed shipping actually). Concurrent hatches in same incubator did awesome... I feed them some high protein feed from the Christiansburg Tractor Supply- Purina Game Bird starter and they seem to do well with it.

Christiansburg tractor supply gets chicks next weekend Ive heard and have been asked if next sat is first swap of the year.

Dublin has a new true value store that carries bird supplies and I'm twisting arms to see if they will carry Purina game bird starter, layer and conditioner since no one else in the New River will carry all.

Hope to see everyone soon!
Chris

I believe the first swap at tsc is in april... at least it was last year. Roanoke's is the third Saturday in March.

Chicks and ducklings are scheduled to arrive at TSC of Spotsylvania today. I was told that this would be an assorted selection based on which hatchery delivered in a round delivery schedule. Promised the wife I wouldn't buy any chicks but my daugther's birthday was Valentine's day and she now has some money to spend. How do you tell a ten year old girl No;-)

These are two of the chicks I brought home today. They were labeled "red pullet" so I'm assuming they're some sort of sex linked breed.

Here's a group photo. Two of the other four are GLW, and the other two are barred rocks. I really can't tell them apart though. And then of course my duckling is right there in the middle of it all. Lol

Hello all,
I am in Richmond and looking to get started. I have been reading the guides on building the coop and should be ok there. I have a question about what breeds do well in our climate for eggs. The next follow up question is going to be where would I go about obtaining said breeds. From scanning the previous posts the Gilmanor swap looks like a good option. I know i have also seen some chicks at the local SS last year not sure what breed but will check again soon.

Welcome to the Virginia thread & BYC!

First, I am assuming that you want eggs for home purposes. Do you want white, light brown, dark brown, or colorful eggs? Or all of these? Here is a popular chart that will give you some broad information on many breeds. It does not cover sex-links or easter eggers which are popular but will give you great start at answering your questions. Since you live in the Richmond area, only a few breeds which are very cold climate breeds would not work well. ALl the rest will be fine.

Here is the chart: http://www.sagehenfarmlodi.com/chooks/chooks.html

LOL- you will spend some time going through this listing of breeds. Enjoy!
