My Barred were the only ones wanting out early this morning. They were all sleeping in. My hubby went out to check all feeders and waterers. Black Rubber bowls are great in this weather, he says. The beautiful Blue laced Darkest Red english Orpingtons are laying again and in this weather! My hubby calls them the purple gang, they are happy. Their dark Red is almost purple like.

I may break down and set their eggs along with the Lavenders, we here had agreed not to set eggs in the incubator till end of Feb. I wonder if my hubby is going to hold me to that? Really need to look at seriously selling two Blue English Orpingtons so I can add two Lavenders. I have a space set aside for girls for the black and copper MARANS.
I really need to sell some Phoenix Bantams soon and make way for others. Right now my hubby is holding my feet to the fire. If something comes in,.. Something must go out. Gee I am now weighting things out, chickens in one hand and him in the other. I guess after 43 years he gets to stay.

The reason the Galax one cant do it is because of the pet store that is down the plaza from them. Why cant C-burg one do it?
Shelor said no. They own the property.
I know the pet store complained to property management. That is why I do not shop there at the pet store. Afraid of a little competition? What is there to be afraid of? I have not seen anyone at the TSC selling Pet fish and hamsters. No one peddling kittens. I avoid trouble makers, I dont shop there. There us a farm supply further into Galax that does have one every Sat morn during summer.

What do you have in your orchard?

My in-laws gave us some cash to start a few fruit trees here. I'm thinking something both the bees and chickens can use would be best.

I'm curious. How happy are you with the Marans? I have two blue Marans pullets left, but my guess is it will be at least a month before they even think about laying.

They pull their wagon just fine. The are fairly laid back and their feed consumption is better than any of my other birds. 10 pullets started laying in Oct, and they've layed well so far, no artificial lighting. The eggs sure make a pretty mixed carton. Sometimes they throw spots of pigment in the white or on the yolk, but I guess that goes with the territory.

I still shop at both the TSC and the pet store. Know people that work at both, and most people that work at those places are nice. In fact I'm gonna go get me some boots at the TSC here soon

I'm pretty excited. And come to think of it, the Marans pullets are my largest, but never seem to park themselves at the feeder. Time will tell what color eggs they lay.

We should have brown, blue, and (theoretically) chocolate eggs once everyone starts working. The only thing missing is white. Any recommendations?
