I'm in Augusta County on the edge of Craigsville, and I work in Staunton. I'm just starting out and have never actually owned a chicken.... I've got a small 4x4 coop ("Le Coop") and an incubator (Genesis 1588) coming in the mail - I strongly believe in jumping in with both feet.

I plan on learning as much as I can by doing this whole process from start to finish - from egg to egg, so to speak. I'll probably order 8 hatching eggs, hoping to get a few pullets and a roo. I'll then hatch again if necessary to get me up to a flock of 5-6 hens and a doughty rooster to guard them, trying to offload the extra roos after they've grown up enough for me to choose the best. I plan to let them free range to a great extent in the forest behind my house and put them up at night. I'd like a few Easter Eggers and a few Speckled Sussex for now. My husband and I may move to Highland in the next few years, so I am "practicing" to be able to have a larger flock to support a homestead then. I'll probably focus on Speckled Sussex in the larger flock if the few I raise this year work out and don't have any frostbite issues.
Any tips for the newbie?

Hi,
No I have not been down to Polyface Farm yet.
Some friends and I plan on visiting some time within the next month or so.
We also went to hear Joel speak last month up in Harrisonburg.
What they're doing out there at Polyface really resonates with me, and I'd like to visit their farm and learn more.
