Does ANYONE live close enough to me that they would like to purchase a few (4-6) roos??

I am asking EVERYONE at this point. They are 6 weeks old and we won't be able to keep them.

I am in Montgomery County, Virginia. If you know someone who would like them and they live close by, let me know.

I'll let you know on the cochins! I told them to hold off on setting the eggs for a bit as I'm expecting my Ideal order, and we just started on our new coop, which is turning into a big job. Who was the one that wanted the ginormous coop and run?! Ooooh, right, it was me!

I ordered some Gold Brabanters from Ideal that should come today or tomorrow. There's only supposed to be one roo in the bunch, so I hope that's the case.

It's my first order from a hatchery, too.

I am so super excited about these lemon blues, you have no idea! I've seen them on BYC but figured I didn't have a snowballs chance of getting any! Since those guys are SR, I would be more than happy to help out with the rooster situation if you end up with a bunch

good luck with your Ideal babies! Please let me know how your experience is with them. I'm really considering ordering from them as well. I ordered from McMurray (first mail order chicks), and have been very pleased. Have a blessed day

Edit: good luck with your coop too! I had to have the whole shebang as well. I threw a "coop raising party" had a cook out, supplied some beer. Hubby and his buddies got it done in 2 days. I was impressed, a little beer and food went a long way!

Thanks! The coop is a work in progress. I had to ask my dad to help me (no hubby yet. lol!), and we both work, so most of our free time is during the weekend. Maybe I should've thrown a coop raising party, and invited some of my friends. We've got the floor down so far, and now we've started framing the sides and trying to find a good deal on roofing metal. I expect I'll end up shelling out at least $100 for roofing, along with finding someone to haul it. It makes me swear my next vehicle will be a truck/SUV when I finally replace my car!

Hopefully, the st. run won't end up being a lot of roos, but it's always a gamble with st. run. Maybe they'll split up nice and even, though, or even be mostly hens.

I got my Ideal order today, and all were active and peeping (no DOAs

) and wanted to start eating and drinking as soon as I put them in the brooder, so I was very happy with that. The post office called me at close to 6am, so I rushed down to get them and had them home in the brooder by around 6:20 or so. It actually worked out nicely, since I didn't have to leave work to go and get them. I checked on the chickies before I left for work, and they seemed to be doing good. Can't wait to get home and check on them after work though.

I do have one issue, though, which is that I ordered 10 chicks and requested insurance/no males for warmth, and I still ended up with 6 extra chicks (don't know what breed they are yet), so either someone can't count, or they sent me a bunch of extra roosters (or hopefully, but not likely, hens). *sigh* Oh well, I guess they could be freezer birds (trying not to get attached to the extras at the moment). My boss also mentioned she might like the extras to use for bug control in her yard, so I'll see how it goes as they get older. Odd that Ideal told me I'd have to pay the couple dollars for insurance if I didn't want extras, but then they added extras anyway; I think there was a bit of confusion there, but that's okay. At least all the chicks were doing well when they arrived, and I got some free chickens to go with the ones I bought.

Congrats on your new chicks (and the extra ones, too!).

A coop raising sounds like fun. Wish I had thought of that when building my coop.

They're a LOT of work! And if you're like me, you gotta re-do everything cuz there's no instruction manual that tells you which way is UP!
