That's what I plan on doing also.makes better sense to hatch your own stock,you save a bit of money doing it that way. I hope mine keep laying good for three years or more. I have only had chickens for less than a year .I have5 red stars,2barred rocks,and two delawares as my egg layers.I love them. For fun I have millie cochins ,silkies,and showgirls.
I want to start showing my silkies but I still have so much more to learn.Like you I think my birds are special also and they give us nice healthy eggs.I will never go back to store bought eggs again.

I am in Spotsylvania County at the Spotsy/Orange Line. We have 1 RIR rooster and hen, 1 golden cochin bantam hen (as I've been told), 1 silkie bantam hen and 2 sex link(?) hens, 9 fish (goldfish, bettas and glowies) and 4 housecats. All are spoiled rotten.

Rudy the Rooster probably needs to be rehomed (I have a thread in another spot about him).

We started with chickens about a year ago. My son is autistic and a new neighbor moved in with ducks, chickens, dogs, cats and birds. Needless to say, it didn't take long for "I want chickens and ducks" to begin. I broke on the chickens and refused the ducks!

I have found the chickens to be my own source of "therapy" on stressful days. I like the fresh eggs as well.

If Rudy gets rehomed I guess I will be getting more chickens. My son likes the looks of Polish (? the ones with the crowns on top?) and silkies. Any idea where I could get some older ones? Not interested or set up for babies. My cats were all rescues and would most likely go after baby chicks.

You could also try Craig's List. I've seen people selling Silkies on there, but I have no idea of the quality.
