Viva Las Vegas!

I realize some of the real bonuses of living in Las Vegas is not having to worry about fleas and ticks.
Does this carry over to chicken buts as well? I was just out holding one of our little girls and, within fifteen minutes, had three miniscule bugs crawling on my hand. When looking at pics online, they appear to be mites but I am unsure if they can survive in the desert. Maybe a few are just going to happen regardless?

Mites definitely happen here. You'll want to get some poultry dust and dust them. I got mine from IFA. Make sure you get something to cover your nose/mouth and use gloves. Follow the directions on the canister. Make sure you get the vent area really well. Good luck!

Here are some of my up and coming that I'm loving!

Jack, the father, a way too colorful Splash Copper Marans and Juanita, the mother, a beardless, blue laying EE, created these 3 ....full blooded sisters....the variety is just amazing!

Jilly

Gidget

Picaso

Beauties, right?!? I'm hoping for olive eggs!

Wow. It's soooo quiet here lately. I hope that no news is good news and that you're not all hospitalized with heat stroke! I'm sad that summer vacation is almost over...got a call today from the teacher I'll be subbing for. Her baby came early so she needs me to start the school year. I expect to hear from the school confirming this and letting me know when to be back sometime this week. I hope to keep the flock here until the end of September so they can enjoy the cool weather that I'll be missing.

I'll also need to make a final decision on who goes to freezer camp and who gets an all expenses paid trip to Vegas.

I have soooo many chicks running around at all ages and stages of growth. I can already tell (pretty much) which are boys. In fact today I heard a pitiful squeaky crow and assumed it must be one of Quorra's blue boys but followed the sound to find Casino's very obvious boy crowing his little heart out. He's not yet a month old! I couldn't believe it.

My newest broody mama, Zeva, ended up with 6 little chicks, 3 yellow and 3 black. The 2 cheeky yellow chicks are from Zeva and Ruby's olive eggs and the yellow chick with the fuzzy legs, I think, I hope, is my 2nd generation Wheaten Marans!

It was the last to hatch and so is smaller than the rest. I had thought that Winner wasn't getting the job done but now I'm thinking all these chicks are his. He romances the girls on the down low during the day but as soon as old man Jack goes to roost, which is generally quite early, Winner makes up for lost time! So then the hen gets up and lays her egg first thing and who's do you think the chick would be? I'm thinking Winner. Besides, not a single chick has any blue on it and Jack has consistently fathered blue-ish chicks. Of the 3 black chicks, one is from O'hara's blue egg so it's clean faced and pea combed, and 2 are from Marans eggs. The chick from Inkheart is black with a brown face and the chick from Quorra is black and white (with a bit of yellow) and just a touch of leg fluff. I need to get more pictures but it's been raining some everyday and everything is a bit soggy. I know, I know, boo hoo, right? Really, it's the flies...gack!

Anyways...hope all is well in Sin City! I will get a pic of my 3 French hens and their eggs for Peep_Show and Casinos littles for Max and Holly31....tomorrow!

Sooooo..... Following the trend of naming poultry with foody names (in the event they may go to freezer camp, so I gather), is it Winner as in "Winner Winner Chicken Dinner"?

That would be cool if it the fuzz-legged one were a 2nd gen. Marans. How's the egg color?

No hospitalizations here. But when the temps get to Excesssive Heat Warning stage, things generally wind down and stay indoors. I find the summer months I've got more NetFlix and TV viewing going on, even though the sun is out longer..... And this upcoming week I'll probably not be going anywhere because it's my fav TV stuff: Shark Week.

Hi Vegas Chick! No hospitalization here either. Waking ultra early to get horses ridden or run, then a little of work and a lot of rest/sleep before staying up late for more horse stuff. I am actually a substitute teacher too. I'm in school to be a SpEd teacher but am excited to just rejoin the force as a sub in the fall.

Hopefully we'll be down to the double digits by the time you're back.

Your roosters are too amazing! All the colour and beauty of both Winner and Jack are gorgeous! Is there a name for Picasso's colour? Their 'As the Coop Turns' romances are hilarious! We're having quite a bit of cattiness among our girls as it is. I can't imagine throwing a couple of roosters into the mix!

I would love to see your olive eggs!

Peep Show, I could not agree more about the ideal timing for shark week in the midst of Excessive Heat Warnings! Time to gear down completely and stay cool.

Our girls are eating a good bit of watermelon and are actually giddy with excitement whenever I refill their water jug as they know it's full of a lot of ice and a little water. They all gather around the dish.... Waiting for keg stands to begin....

I have to laugh.... I can -- thanks to Shark Week -- now identify seven different species of shark on sight, which doesn't seem to be very useful in the middle of the desert..... (Oh, and of course let's not forget the Vegas staples of Card Sharks, Pool Sharks and Land Sharks!)

Yes! Winner is gonna be chicken dinner! Sooner than later if he keeps it up...He jumped me and my niece yesterday! She cried, I kicked and the last time that happened to my dad we had chicken that night. We'll see. The good news is I gave a Wheaten Marans roo to my friends that I get eggs from so I have a back up plan. The bad news? I just gotta choose a female to send them too which is waaay harder! How do you give away a Marans hen that lays eggs like these? I don't know who lays which but you can see that they are both a good size and color, especially compared to Fifi's (Salmon Faverolle).

The first pic shows the size difference in the first chick hatched and the last. Plus, I think that the giant one is a boy. This is the chicklet that hatched last...out of a Marans pullet egg. I'm super hoping for a girl! Look at the fuzzy little legs! I've only seen Winner breeding the Wheatens so I'm thinking it's my 2nd gen.

Happy Shark Week!!!

Yay! A fellow subber! Thanks for the compliments on the boys. I don't know of a name for Picasso's color besides...awesome! I will try to get a pic of some of Ruby's eggs. My other OE is Zeva and as she is being a mama and not laying right now.

I've been feeding my girls watermelon, my nieces and my chickens, and both are loving it!

I hope the heat eases up a bit! Stay cool!
