Vultures?

You are allowed to kill most any animal if it is attacking or threatening your livestock.

Well, mine have pink heads lol... and there's about 100 of them flying around. Those are endangered

Sorry...but the bird you are talking about is the common Turkey Vulture. These birds are not endangered. But all Birds Of Prey are protected by law. But there is the 3 S rule...shoot...shovel....shadup.
But I wouldnt take any action unless I saw the animal attacking my birds.

this is just my personal opinion.
nuyasha if it flew in your run it's called eminent danger, blast away. you have the right to defend property be it live, real, personal ect. i could think of a whole bunch of definitions plus i wonder what they carry, lice or what ever yuck they may have on them. but identify it first anyway. it may just be a rouge and needs to be removed by who ever does that in your area.

Thanks sam. Like I said I hate to shoot a animal. I know its the circle of life but I do love my babies. I will shoot only if it is attacking or in the coop scaring them. I dont shoot for the fun of it. I will be covering our run and watching my girls and boys like an eagle

My vulture story - about 23 years ago a vulture flew into my garage and would not leave. My son called me at work and I called the Dept of Wildlife.
Since my son was young and impressionable and because he was really big into 4H he knew it was illegal to kill them. The people at the Dept of Wildlife "could not" come right out and tell me to kill the bird but they kept hinting at it. I was adamant - that I was not going to kill that bird nor was I going to ask my son to since it was illegal.
Finally after 2 hours of me frustrating them to death demanding they come get this bird since it was their job they finally agreed to come get it. I was home by the time they arrived and you could tell the Wildlife official was really frustrated. But, Like I told him. They made the rules and I was not about to tell my 10 year old son that it was ok to break the law.
I am sure the bird was sick and I am sure they disposed of it. And I am sure also that those things stink to high heaven. So be sure if you kill it to stand way back. (I also have another funny vulture story but I will post it later.)

NOOOOOOOOOO. don't do it.

That thing will throw up all over the place and let me assure that stinks really bad. That was my other vulture story.

About a guy that moved here from another part of the country and apparently he was major city dude.
On his way to work one morning he hit a Turkey Vulture. He thought it was a Turkey and threw it in his trunk. Took it to work with him to see if any of the other guys (firefighters) new how to clean it.

They said his trunk was a mess. That vulture was not dead just injured. That guy never did get his car to stop stinking.

*we have turkey buzzards in FL. They rarely bother stuff living, in my experience, but they do get nosy sometimes and buzz pretty close. HOWEVER, what about eggs? Might have been looking for eggs, or maybe the vultures have a nest nearby and are thinking the roosters a threat? Regardless, you might try the CD trick before resorting to shooting-- I'm gonna try it as a hawk deterent.

It is a turkey vulture and right now they are migrating from southern Pa and tend to be in large groups. They have the pink heads and are so ugly they are cute. I have never seen more and 2 or 3 at once. I would say this bird may have been curious or smelled the droppings and wanted to check it out. If it didnt find anything I dont think it should be back, they may just be hanging around temporarily because of the weather the last few weeks in this area.

If you think its injured or its bothering your animals, call the game commission and see what they say. They are very informative, we have called many times.

by the way, this does say they are protected.

I will try the CD trick. I wont trap it.I know they are not migrating becuase they have been here for 2 years and the wont leave. You dont know how shocked I was when it flew into the coop. The number ranfge from january to july as 10-20. then july to december as 50 and up. They are getting to close for comfort. If I do shoot it I will make sure to drown myself in cologne to help me not throw up. I have a weak stomach lol

vultures are protected by the migratory bird act of 1970 something. If you shoot or trap it be as descrete as possible.

I often have them hanging out in the trees when i have chicks roaming the yard, makes me very nervous. Not really a problem in the winter when chicks are not around
