Among our family of chickens. There is one hen who is very special.. Waggy, she is about 3 years old and very happy, but over the winter had a bad accident. Our coop got very cold one night and Waggy got very bad frostbite on her feet. She ended up losing both feet and some of her leg. Our rooster Jerry lost just the tip of a toe. She now lives in our house, everyday its sunny we take her out to have a dust bath and eat some buggies. She had been learning how to get around without feet and is starting to get very good at it! she even started laying eggs again. We have some in our incubator that are developing!(Jerry jumped her on her out door days...) We are working to get her prosthetics very soon, one is in the prototype stage and she has tried it on and loved to walk again.

Younger pic of her

How precious...you are to be commended for being diligent to see that she is on her way! Kudos to you!!

Agreed! Love her prostetics! Looks like she's on her way to feeling wonderful!

Waggy and Maggie are so sweet. It is wonderful that you are taking such good care of her in your home.

Are you making a silicone cast for the prostetic?

I really want to see the what it looks like after it is cast and how she does with it. It may take some trial and error to come up with a design that works best for her. But anything to cover the end of her legs is good to protect her stumps.

It is nice of Feathercup to submit to a plaster cast of her foot for the cause. My husband has worked some with silicone and casting for an art project, so I have some idea how many steps can go into making something like this.

I am going subscribe to this thread to see how things turn out, so please keep us updated. Keep up the good work.

Hoping the new prosthetics work wonderfully for her! And Maggie is darling. She must be making her very happy. Please let us know how the casting went. Best wishes!

Awww.....how wonderful you are taking such good care of her!!! She is adorable and I am sure she really appreciates all the love you give her.

Keep us posted on her condition! :-)

Sorry about the lack of updates everyone.
We don't have anything to make a proper prosthetic from at the moment. The mold we made in the pics above was a test one out of clay. We are hoping to save up some money and get a 3d printer to print of a good one. But in the meantime we are looking into other methods of making her prosthetics

Waggy is currently having a good summer, She is outside in the garden all the time and playing in the dirt quite often :) Still giving us eggs too

If anything big happens we will let you all know :)

Hey, @SimmyChicky Yikes 3D printers are expensive. I think if you look on line you can look up businesses that do 3D printing if you send them the plans.

But you could cast a silicone foot from the mold of the one you made out of clay.

Or maybe you could contact the folks who printed the leg for the duck. Even a modification of that prosthetic, if they would make it for you would be less expensive than getting your own 3D printer. Here is a link to the duck's Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/ButtercupTheDuck
It wouldn't hurt to message them on facebook.

Let us know if any leads look promising.
