Don’t do what I did when my cayugas were little. I put a small amount of white nail polish on the shoulder blades so I could tell him apart from the females but not eat it. But then the girls could see the different color and they pecked at it until the hair was all gone in that spot. Poor dude.

You could buy some bands online. The bands we have in our tractor Supply are for adults. When mine were almost full grown, I bought colored zip ties. But you have to be very careful to not make it too tight.

Yes the pine shavings is normal. Think of them as teething toddlers right now. They are learning by putting things in their mouth.

Your brooder is awesome by the way. I love that picture. It’s so sweet. My cayuga ducklings run to me and hop to be picked up when I call for them. I love it.

I was actually curious if putting a color on their feathers would trigger pecking from the others. And I’m scared the leg bands would get too tight too quick with how quick babies grow. Hm... maybe I’ll just wait to officially deal out names until feathers start coming in and more personality coming out.

IF you are very diligent, you could buy the colored small hair bands at Walmart and put them on their legs. But you would have to monitor how they are fitting so they don’t cut into their skin. And have them fit kinda loose.

I had the same problem last year. I actually used a sharpie on their tails and I didn’t have any problems. But that’s not gonna work with your babies. I had two Khaki Campbells so I got different colored soft elastic stretchy ribbon and just sewed a loop to fit loosely on their legs. You can make them any size you want and it won’t dig into them. Another thing you could try is a glitter nail polish. It won’t have color but just a bit of sparkle.
