Does anyone know if I can use Ivermectin paste 1.87% for oral use in horses (apple flavored) to treat a standard size chicken for worms. My vet recommended Ivermectin, but did not clarify the dose or route. Any thoughts?

Are your birds diagnosed with tapeworm? To my knowledge that's the only worm which horse wormer is required to kill. If it's any other kind of worm, it's much easier to treat with a simple chicken wormer designed for use in the drinking water.

Based on the symptoms, probable gape worm long standing. I acquired the hen from someone else who didn't properly care for her. I would prefer not to treat the entire flock (15) as would be the case if I treated the water. And what I've read on the packaging says it treats nearly all worms except tape worms. I'm not sure who gave you that tid bit.

Ivermectin has lost it's effectiveness against most chicken worms due to it's overuse. Valbazen or SafeGuard Liquid Goat wormer or Equine Paste is very good to use. Valbazen dosage is 1/2 ml orally and repeat in 10 days. SafeGuard can be used that way, or 1/4 ml per pound for 5 straight days orally for more stubborn worms. Here are some links where they can be found, and many feed stores carry them locally:

The horse paste recommended for treatment of tapeworms is a different horse wormer, not ivermectin, I can't remember what the exact medication is right now. I was given the diagnosis and treatment by my avian vet, highly respected in her field.

You're thinking of either Zimectrin Gold or Equimax equine paste wormers. Both contain ivermectin and praziquantel. Praziquantel kills tapeworms.
