We are about to lose 3 chickens that have been determined to be roosters. We can't keep them in the coop and because of the size of our coop and our geographic location (Northern MN) we need a few more hens to keep the temp. up through winter. (And honestly we wouldn't mind the extra eggs). Please let me know if you have any ideas or any hens you're willing to re-home.

We only want unvaccinated, non hormone fed, unmedicated girls. Preferably a silkie to keep our other one company, or a frizzle or lavender orph. Thank you in advance!!

I received an email from Tractor Supply Company (TSC) that says chick days are starting now in select stores. You can look up (on their website) which stores will have the chicks. Not what you are asking for, but as an alternative if you don't find 3-4 month old chicks.

Check craigslist too. People sell their chickens (& other animals on there.)

Check the forum buy-sell-trade on here. Sometimes people need to rehome hens. It would be posted under the free rehoming under the buy-sell-trade forum.

I don't understand why you can't keep the roosters because of geographical location and the size of your coop.

The roosters can't be kept because we only have 7 hens and 3 roosters! A couple of them have to go and our coop is humongous and uninsulated so we have to have a few more in their to keep the internal temperature up when it gets below 0 degrees.

The reason for more hens is more eggs. We have a large family and many boys who enjoy their omelets in the morning.

Time to put those hungry boys to work on insulating the coop!

I understand about the ratio of roosters to hens.

Could you make a separate coop and run for the boys? Make a rooster flocks so the roosters don't have to be rehomed or sent to freezer camp?

If I may make a suggestion .how about some white chanteclers ?Chanteclers are a Canadian breed specially bred for cold weather. they will play in the snow at - 30 below. No Coop heating needed. there are several Chantecler breeders in Minnesota. they're just a wonderful bird. I'm getting some here in Western Pennsylvania later this year. this is the right time of year to shop for some started birds or some retired breeding birds . there is a national Club called Chantecler Fanciers International . it has a Breeders Directory. if you can't find somebody close to you ,please call the Secretary of the Club and the Secretary can help you find somebody closer to you. these are wonderful Birds .they are good for eating. they lay great eggs. Hens are gentle and the roosters are gentle and Noble.
Best ,
Karen

Thank you, Karen!! I will look into it. I appreciate the help :)

Well here's a real good idea .the Chantecler National Meet ( show) is going to be held the last weekend in October in Hutchinson Minnesota. all of the top breeders from the nation will be there. if you're looking for some birds ,you can contact them and get the birds and they will deliver them to you at the show . I believe probably some breeders from Canada will be there who have beautiful birds. it's a chance to get some of the best Chantecler stock around. I would contact the Secretary of the Club and ask for more particulars on the meet. it's always a good time ! you get to meet some great Chantecler people and pick up some beautiful birds .
Best ,
Karen
