Speaking of fruitcake... my family always made Italian fruitcake at Christmas time. Totally different than anything I've ever seen before. I did a google search, and still can't find anything remotely close.
Our dough was made with wine (the reddest, sweetest, cheapest stuff made for the best cakes lol). Its rolled out thin, then we add a little sugar and cinnamon, some raisins and nuts, and its all rolled up real purty like, and baked. Took all day, even with several of us participating in the making. (the wine could have contributed to dragging out the process.. )

This is the only pic I could find in my stash. Anyone ever seen anything like it?

You've got the right stuff, but you're searching for the wrong name. It's calle Italian Christmas Cake - and every family has their own recipe(s.) You can start here - it's a good, basic cake that's been upated to knock out the lard and some of the other hard-to-find goodies:

No, the bars need to be horizontal* (edit) and the hardware cloth is a bad idea. The size is good.

My Dad took one look at the cost of catering and offered us girls a lump sum and a ladder to elope. Then he remembered my ... ummm ... lack of coordination ... and said that, for me, he'd make a minor exception. If I gave him a week's notice, he'd build me a staircase.

For rats, yes. Mice like to tunnel into bedding. I wouldn't put them in something quite that large and open.
