Welcome to BYC! I have a 12 yr old grandchild who is high functioning. I am very careful when letting him deal with chicks. He doesn't have much empathy with them and I do.

polish chickens seem to make great pets.

You should do a hatch yourself. Raising the chicks yourself is very fun and it makes them friendlier.
you can buy an incubator and some eggs
