Hello. I am a new member to backyard chickens. However, over the last three years I have begun raising chickens and have come here REPEATEDLY for information for everything from:
1) Chicken behavior - my hubby bought a flock of chicks that were supposed to be pullets and after a few weeks we
heard a “hen” crowing like a rooster. I found out that mistake sexing is common with chicks and we had a rooster (THE GOOSTER) I love him and he is still alive. He is a beautiful gentle Rhode Island white.
2) one my my hens broke her leg and I read what to do with her as far as Care.
3) how to tame a ROOSTER (THE GOOSTER) imagine! Something as simple as picking him up and carrying him around??!!! I have told my hubby this MULTIPLE TIMES! He still doesn’t believe me.
3) Feather dusting - this one was REALLY FUNNY! I had NO IDEA chickens even did this. I thought there was something wrong with them!
4) Wing cutting - I didn’t have the stomach to cut the tendon and found a much more simple solution and a way to spend quality time with my daughter with this one. She would catch them and I would cut the feathers with scissors. This seems much more humane.
5) Molting - this is scary and messy if you have never endured it with your chicks before. It hurt my heart to see my gals go through this. For some reason it happened to them more so than my roosters.
6) AND TODAY - one of my roosters from the newest spring flock got string wrapped around his foot. I will be doing a head count and behavior observation DAILY now. We have our own business that demands ALOT of our time so our chicks get a scoop of food quickly thrown out and fresh water and that’s about the 10 minutes of attention they get. Otherwise, they obviously free range and put themselves up at night.
I am glad to FINALLY sign up for
backyardchickens.com and be able to share my experiences as well as hopefully have some input if needed
