WARNING! do not leave 1 day old chicks by water. My babies drowned!

I always keep marbles in the water just for this reason, til they are almost 2 weeks old. So sorry.

I was shocked to see my little chick fall asleep mid-eating with her head in the feeder...I could totally see them drowning from that...amazing!

That looks really similar to the one we have (see my pic above) is there a difference? are the edges straight up on one and angled on mine? ??? Curious if I got lucky in my purchase and the rocks are not needed?

They ARE different. The one you are using has a wide trough area. This one has a VERY narrow area for the water. It is also more shallow than yours. You have to see them side by side to really see the difference.

I took another look and compared, I can see the difference...my store doesn't sell the one you posted (hence the reason I have the one I have) but I'm pretty sure the rocks will help.

I wonder if the chicks are AOK that shavings are getting into their water...???

Wow, I never even thought of them drowning in the water. Good thing I never put anything in there that would do that....I have just been lucky on this one. So sorry, but if it helps, you probably saved some chicks by pointing this out and this disappointing accident.

I got my no drowns through strombergschickens.com They sell packs of them and even half gallon jars that can be put on them if you don't want to use a mason jar.

This fount definitely does not need marbles or stones. The one drawback is that it does clog easily with shavings and has to be cleaned out often because of that. It is absolutely the best though for when the chicks are on paper towels and raising the waterer when you get them onto shavings does help with the clogging problem. I just use short bits of 2x4 to put under. My friends use bricks to raise their waterer.

I usually switch from the no drowns to regular waterers around 3 to 4 weeks old. By then they have the sense and motor control to keep from drowning.
