I have to apologize .....I shouldn't have "given" up so soon . The vet really set me off when I called him that day telling me that there was nothing else I could do .

He is usually a pain in the you know what when it comes to doctoring ....must be the Bute kicking in that helped for the washing of the wound . The shot was the worst but as I posted...I think we found a way to overcome it .

What does everyone think about using the diaper idea and vet wrap ? It sure would be easier and less money . I am home 24/7 and would be able to monitor him should it slip .

I know a lady who rehabs horses and she uses the diaper's. She says they work great. You have done a great job, it looks so much better than the first picture. I have had horses for over 30 yrs and I would say that that's one of the worst wonds I've seen in a very long time. There is a great groups of horse people that have lot's of good info on how to treat this stuff it's called rescuseonly.proboards59.com lot's of good info from people who have had to treat horses with this kind of wond.
Good Luck and keep up the good job.

I don't have any advice to give, but I have been watching this thread and wanted to tell you to keep up the good work! The second set of pictures look so much better than the first set. Sounds like you are a dedicated mom and are willing to do what ever you can to get your boy feeling better

There are so many that would have seen it and put him down just for the sheer fact that they were too lazy to even attempt to help.

He is a beautiful horse and he is lucky to have you as him momma!!

Looking better. It is going to be hard to keep that wrap on because of location.

On bute.... I would ask for a full bottle of injectable Banamine from your vet. The reason being - and I was taught this from Texas A&M, that if you use injectable Banamine and give it via the mouth instead of injecting it, then you reduce your chances of stomach damage. I can vouch for it because we used it for nearly 6 months trying to get a filly of ours Moonblindness under control. She never had issues with stomach, but later in life lost her due to other complications.

Keep up the good work!!

just viewing the firt picture, I was going to say the wound needs to be debrided down to healthy bleeding tissue. And maybe surgically revised.
The second pic looks much better. The wound may need continued debriding to remove dead tissue and trigger the healing cascade if it's not improving. (convert a chronic wound back to an acute wound)
I would not use any strange concoctions as washes or packing. Solutions should be isotonic or they can actually be damaging to healing tissue. For instance, Betadine or peroxide is not good- too damaging.
Hang in there, I have seen some horrible (human) wounds heal that I thought had no hope (ran a wound care center)Was there any structural involvement- tendons, etc?

Great job! The wound looks much better. Keep it up!!

Many people don't use vets, so don't think that you are a bad person because you can't afford it, plus real experience often trumps "book learnin" any day. It was a good thing you came on here and asked, you got some great advise! (Turned out the advise you got here was better than what the vet told you)

He is looking better!

When our horse was hurt last summer, he was on 2 grams of bute, twice per day for 5 days and then 2 grams, once per day for a while. It just took the edge off...he's 16.2 and a little chunky. He was also on penicillin but 20cc every other day. It was a "long-lasting" type...

The wound is looking better on your boy.

What are you using to clean it with?

I highly recommend furazone & DMSO mix...but you'll have to use latex gloves to put it in there...I would wash it out and let it dry a little bit, then slather on the furazone/DMSO and rebandage.

I have horses, and we use the diaper. It works great. We have a thorobred that has soft feet and gets abcesses alot we wrap her hoof with a diaper vet wrap and duct tape, it works to keep her foot dry and clean. I don't see why it won't work on this guy. His wound looks alot better. Keep up the good work. Has far as your horse beening a pain in the butt, once they realize your helping them they usually settle down.
You had better keep us updated. lol
