Was so mad I nearly beat my roo to death.

I honestly don't think it's the "norm" to have an aggresive rooster. Our head roo is aggresive with the other roosters but never ever with us. That would be one thing that I just wouldn't stand for!! And yea he might get his head cracked against something!! And oh to me it's not abuse when I'm preventing something from hurting me!!

I'm sorry, but whacking his head and hearing a thud is just plain animal abuse. I don't care if it was a chicken, rooster, whatever. You are dominant, and it was not necessary to do that. If you want him dead, do it in a humane way. Sorry, JMHO

You shouldn't keep him...it will only get worse...we finally got rid of our mean rooster after I came in bloody on a couple occassions, tried all the "fixes" he just didn't get it...it was going to get to a point of fighting into and out of the pen every time....so soup it was...better than whopping him all the time with something or pinning him down and putting him in a cage everytime I had to go into the yard....it ain't worth it to be hurt, you will slip up again and he will go after you and the continual confrontation between you two isn't going to be good for either of you!!! JMHO

Stewpot he goes and not worth the risk trying to keep yourself safe from him. I think with OP's whapped his head, I think it probably was once. Once you are in a blind rage, you don't think, you just act out even it is not the best of cicumstances but neverthanless, if the roo stayed away from her, then her job is done. If not, off with his head. Enough is enough with OP's rooster and it is justified in her actions what she needs to do with the roo next time. It may just happen once.

I don't tolerate roosters being aggressive toward humans, and if that is not the breed's trademark of disposition (like the Welsummers and Spitzhaubens) they should not be aggressive toward humans or threaten humans to attack. Sure a roo has his job to his hens and keeping them safe however humans, no need to attack the hand that feed them.

This method has worked well for me, I just use my rake. I have a big RIR and have done this a few times. We now have reached an understanding and he doesn't try his tricks anymore. I still don't trust him or turn my back on him and I always have a rake at hand when he's in the barn with me. The last time he tried to come at me I ran him off with my rake to the end of the pasture and kept him going until he started squawking. I also kept him away from the hens while I stayed with them. He did not rejoin the flock until I allowed him to.

I do think roosters will be roosters. They have tiny little pea brains and a natural instinct to protect their hens and try to be top dog. At my house if we can reach a mutual understanding using humane tactic's they stay, if it gets so bad that it cannot be controlled without me wanting to resort to smacking them around then they go to the pot.

I think whacking him on the head to kill him IS a humane method. JMHO

Aww hell hun if you cracked his head on the roost good for you! Woulda done the same thing. But by all means if he ever comes at you again off to freezer camp he should go. If the whap he got today didn't do it then he'll never stop.
