I know this isn't particularly helpful, but I am in Vancouver, WA and I got chicks two and half weeks ago from McMurray through the mail and they came right on time, gave me two extra chicks and all 27 arrived alive and well...

so, they are not all horror stories! I had a great experience and would recommend it. The Post office called me before dawn on the day they arrived and I got them the minute they opened.

Yeah, 99% of chicks make it to their destinations just fine! I got an order in cold weather last year too. It snowed after their arrival too!

Granted it is a higher risk time, you're likly to hear 100% of the hooror stories, and barely half a percent of the many who do make it.

Too bad the local hatcheries are shutting down.

Yes, I definitely spent a LONG time looking for good local hatchery options and came up short for what I wanted. But, that would be ideal in my mind and maybe I just didn't know where to look. I would definitely consider it in the future if I found a good local source.

If you are headed to the ocean (Ocean Shores or Westport) There is a couple of feed stores here that have made quite large orders of different breeds. They are starting to come in the first week of March.

can anyone verify that rumor that Phinney Hatchery is closing?

I have done business with them last year and love them!! They will also process (kill, pluck, clean) your chickens also. It was great last year. I have switched to them as my hatchery of choice.

I will be really disappointed if they go out of business.

I just called Phinney Hatchery. They are still in business. They are retiring. You can still order chicks from them and they will mail them to you, but they are no longer raising them themselves. They are going to keep the processing business open. You will still also get the discounted processing if you buy chicks from them. Which is great news!! They did a fabulous job of processing our chickens last year. Very nice people to deal with.

I have also done business with Monroe Farm and feed and I will second what Silkie Chicken says about the excellent variety of chicks and knowledgeable staff. I have also recieved shipped chicks and the post office has done a good job. No problems at all. The daytrip to the feedstore was lots of fun though, along with the instant gratification of coming home chicks in hand. I got just a few sexed pullets, and it was nice to not have to deal with packing peanut roos.
