Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

As to cost of Burpee seeds.

I posted a few days ago about the huge difference in prices between their catalog and what I paid at Walmart. (much cheaper at WM) Then a poster (sorry I don't remember) ask about the amount of seeds.
Summer squash; Burpee catalog 60 seeds, 4.95
WM 20 seeds .98 (yes, exact same critter) early golden Crookneck.

Winter squash; Burpee catalog 25 seeds, 3.95
WM 40 seeds, .98 (same critter)

Unfortunately WM does not have the full line of seeds, at least not at Chehalis. But I did get almost everything I wanted, plus I even picked up some garlic bulbs to plant this week.

this year walmart is the cheapest place to get seeds! I went there and they also have a section of 10 cent seeds and 20 cent seeds. I grabbed several of those for sunflower seeds, and corn.
Then i got the 99 cent and the $1.09 seeds for squash, one thing of corn (to make sure i have some grow) and other things.. Only issue I had there at all was the lady with 5 kids running around screaming taking things off of shelves and opening packets of seeds. Then she dared to look at me and say "don't be so over protective" cause i made my 2 year old nephew hold my hand and not touch anything that i didn't hand to him.
I rarely go to walmart because people letting kids run wild seems to be the norm. in there.

chicks do most their growing inside the egg the last week right? I'm stressing that my 6 that are due next tuesday wont hatch. I mean there are tons of veins and stuff but they are just embryos right now.

Update on my flock. It took Latte a while to adjust after Blackie, the First, went to auction. I put her in with the 2 OE (Snow and Blackie II) and 1 BCM (Penny) pullets. After a week or so, she became their big sister and started teaching them how to do things. Now she is the top of her flock and seems to be very happy. The OEs and BCM have grown and all 4 of them are about the same size, even though Latte is 9 weeks older. They will be in a coop of their own. Right now they are in a small grow-out coop.

BTW... DH's shoulder buddy, Blackie II looks exactly like Blackie I did when he was younger, before the white feathers began to develop - except that she is definitely a she. My youngest son is very happy to have his Blackie.

My 3 big girls are happy to have their coop to themselves again. Caunnie started laying again yesterday. Drama started laying today.

As stressful as growing out and integrating was, I'm happy things have finally settled down and everyone is getting along. The big girls rarely try to peck at the younger birds, and they all free-range together. My flock is finally "complete".

I use the threaded type with an o-ring gasket. So far, they work great and have been in use for 8-9 months now. The large peanut butter jars (plastic) seem to work very well drilling the holes through the lid and hanging them for chicks. 2 1/2 and 5 gallon buckets are what are used for the coops and the hens seem to like them very well.

I was thinking a gasket would be the way to go for stopping those leaks. I still need to get to Wilco for the waterer nipples and some more chicken food....'cause they like to eat....and poop....

I am glad they are at peace! And you have a female version of Blackie. I would love to get a Brahma like Drama, but I know that I simply can't have anymore chickens!!! My neighbors were extremely cool about it, talked to the last one yesterday, but I don't want to push my luck, lol! I had to stop myself from ordering the Red Shouldered Yokohama's I wanted so bad.

I will be prayin' fer a miracle for the last lil' one.

I wonder if they might end up being small verses size of egg because my mom has a tiny rooster (2 or 3 lbs) with hens that lay very large eggs (leghorn mix's) I mean the eggs had to be in the jumbo egg cartons to fit. We didn't know that the rooster would be that small til he was full grown LOL He's a cochin/silky mix. and despite what everyone says about both breeds being tame and gentle he hates men.

Well, we had many issues, but Frodo finally has healthy chicks.

We lost the three bantams to cocci within two days. So sad...Frodo continued mothering the last chick after it passed, so I went and got these two chicks.

One is a salmon faverolle and the other is a light sussex. Both chosen by my son, he researched the choices we had, I think he did a great job :)

Frodo is very 'motherly'. Unlike Juno (our other broody) she is very content to leave her chicks inside so far (she has had them since Sunday.)
