I do understand how the kids can still enjoy it. I also understand that there is something special about seeing a wrapped gift. There is a wonderful sense of anticipation that is wrapped up in the package. I have found that I enjoy looking at a wrapped gift even when the gift is for someone else, and I know whats in the box. lol It must have something to do with the waiting to open up a surprise.
This will be the first holiday season with both my parents gone. I don't know what will happen. We've always had large family gatherings. Will we splinter into smaller ones or what? I just found out I'm losing my sons for Thanksgiving, I suggested they have their dinner early, and join us for dessert. I could also invite their father to join us for dinner.
It sounds like you are in a very difficult position. I really hope that your sons can understand how important spending time with both of their parents can be. I come from a family that hasn't been close for generations. I have tried for nearly 30 years to somehow keep my side of the family close. It was just a year or so ago that I was talking with my mother, and realized that I had failed to keep their family together. Then I realized that it isn't my job to keep another person's family together. Now I am trying to keep my family together. I have come to know that I will not succeed in this generation either. It has been a tough thing to learn. What should have drawn together, is the same thing that has pushed us apart. I also know that I had no choice about the way things have happened. So all I can do is learn from this experience, and hope that I can make it better in the future. You will be in my thought for this difficult holiday season.
My ex has always been very good about the boys spending the holidays with my family. If there is one thing Koreans understand, it's filial piety. Aging grandparents had first dibs. Plus, American holidays don't mean that much to him. With my parents gone, change is inevitable. We'll work something out.
Well I am really hoping that things will work out for you. No matter what it doesn't sound like it will be easy.

Evening, long time to speak, and all that. It seems that I have 2 roos that I would like to be rid of. One of a barred rock, and he is just plain mean, nothing more to say about that. The other is a Golden Laced Wyandotte who does not seem mean, but not tame at all. Both are 6-7 months old and not tame at all.

Thought I would offer em up here to my friends first, before putting up a notice at the local farm store. Free to anyone wanting to come get them.

Would it matter to you, as to what would happen to them?

Okay I keep getting told by my body that too much movement, will be translated into full back muscle spasms. It seems that just standing, or trying to sweep the floor will set my back muscles off on their own trip. It shouldn't be this darn hard to get something done.

I don't understand why things just seem to keep surprising me. Just getting out of bed has been has been a royal pain in the tush, for sometime now.

My SF pullet is getting in lots of salmon feathers. She's starting to look like a feathered box, she's so broad:



Here is the SF cockerel. I hope he turns out pretty. Any way to tell at this age?



I finally made it outside to plant my garlic. I got a little carried away and filled the whole bed.

And then filled half of a 4X4 bed as well. Now I just need to figure out where to put my leeks. They were supposed to go in the 4X8 bed with the garlic! After I took the pic, I carefully moved all the rows a little ways over and added another row. I planted 8 varieties of garlic (7 hardneck and 1 artichoke) plus a row of elephant garlic.


I've got a ton of garlic left from this year's harvest. I wish I had more room to plant more!

Unfortunately, SF cockerels look like a mess right up too the point that they look great. Lol! I have one that I looked at last week and I thought Ugh! But I looked at him this week and said, wow he is looking mighty fine! So until thay are around 4+ months they don't look very good. Sorry.

Hi, new here and would like some information on where you all get your chicks from. Local or mail order? I would prefer local, but I am looking for silkie bantams and have not seen many of those.

There are actually some Silkie breeders fairly local. Check out the Silkie page on here to see pictures, and get info on them. Hatchery silkies don't look anything like breeder silkies. Even breeders "pet quality" birds are SO much nicer. I will be breeding them in the spring, but like most breeders won't know what I am going to be getting rid of until fall. But this is a great time to get some. You can PM me and I can give you some contacts.

Itsren, ah this is very reassuring. My father in law said he goes threw the same amount of feed since he started free ranging but I think he has a rat problem.

My girls also notice that the humans go into the house through MAGICAL SEE-THROUGH DOORS and so they sit there and peer inside. They like to wait for someone to come out to say hello and pet them. They might form an adorable pile for extra comfort. It's so cute that I don't mind hosing down the porch.

Terror Bird, lol yes this is exactly what my birds love to do the most. Sit on the porch, watch, wait and Poo!

I used to love the Holidays and getting together with family. Everyone would bring something and it would be a fun time. When we moved to WA 20 years ago we came because we had family here. Both my brother and sisters families were here and my sisters husbands family who we loved. Then they all moved away and we are here by ourselves. A few times we've made the trek to Cali but got tired of it since the cost fell on us and no one ever wanted to come up here so I said thats it. I'm not going to pick up and move just to follow family around the country. I'm not going to travel every Holiday when I'm the only one willing to travel to be with them. So it's usually just the 4 of us with me doing the whole meal. All my friends are with their families so there is no one to invite. The boys are older now and the oldest usually has a girlfriend he wants to be with. My husband and the boys used to put up the lights but my husband doesn't care anymore so if I want lights it's up to me. Just another thing to have to do and if no one cares why bother. I am dreading cooking this year. It's just not the same anymore. Depressing.

Where to buy birds really depends on what you expect of said birds. If you want them to "resemble" a breed hatchery birds can do that. IF you want them to be TRUE TO THE BREED you should seek out a breeder of what ever breed.

With as many of us here it is a very good chance of finding the breed you are looking for or a connection to a breeder.
