Hiker dies after bee attack in Phoenix-area canyon

PHOENIX (AP) — A hiker died Monday after he was attacked by a swarm of bees and fell about 150 feet off a cliff at a popular recreation area in Phoenix, authorities said.

Phoenix Fire Department officials say the man was pronounced dead at the scene in the Echo Canyon area of Camelback Mountain.

Two other hikers were airlifted out after each was stung about 300 times. Paramedics said both men were hospitalized in serious but stable condition and expected to recover.

Fire officials said the three men were attacked by bees about 3:45 p.m. on a trail near Ice Box Canyon. The two survivors hid in a small crevice to avoid the swarm until rescuers arrived.

Some of the rescue workers wore white protective suits to keep them from also being stung.

The names and ages of the hikers weren't immediately released.

Here are my chicks that I think look like some of ya'lls....
These first 2 are of the one that I am sure is a cockerel.

See the chick in the upper right of the pic, she has no red /brown in her feathers.

In this pic, the chick second from the left is the one I think looks like Jenns SF chick....

But again these are all just cute little mutts. Are you ready for newly hatched cuteness?????

So far there are 15 chicks hatched and dry, one still in the incubator drying off, and 6 more pips so far!

What lovely chicks! They look so majestic and full of grace, even tiny as they are. I love the colors!

We have poachers out here...BIG long gun issue...after dark.
So I sit here with my rifle on my lap...and DH is biv-wacking with night vision on....poachers were next door...fired once & took off like a shot~~~~~~~~~~~
Next time they will leave with very flat tires.

Crazy! Out of curiousity, what are they going for? Elk?

Quote: Hah, winter is the only time I want to go to Texas. And we *still* sweat. It'll be in the 80s in the Rio Grande Valley. We run around in shorts while our families wear long pants and jackets. But I definitely wouldn't want to visit my sister in the winter. She lives on the border with Canada, and loves to tell me when it hits 30 below.

I love rental cars with unlimited miles. I get a kick out of watching the attendant's face when he looks up the mileage when we return the car.

LOL This reminded me of a trip the the Big Island in Hawaii. We drove around the Island everyday and I know that we put on more miles than the average tourist. My DH was working and one of his customers was on the other side of the Island.

Quote: Well I do need to go see my DSiL in the Bremerton area, and I will able to manage this sometime next week. At least I think so. I will need to talk to DSiL and see when she will home, I can let you know when I get things figured out with my sis. I don't think it would to much farther to be able to pick them up from you then.

Quote: Thanks TerrorBird! Just look at his/her page and they are GORGEOUS! I will be sure to IM Hallerlake when I get home from "work"!

Its been challenging finding all the random birds in one spot, though. I have no patients for CL anymore... Half the people aren't even real and DH and I are never on the same page when it comes to picking up something from there...all I hear is "I wanna boat!" all he hears is "I WANT CHICKENS!"
At least chickens are much cheaper than a boat/ After all the definition of a boat is "A boat is a hole in the water, in which you pour your money into." At least with chickens a person gets eggs, and you can always eat them if you become desperate.

Sometime back in the 1970's my family was hiking the Hoh River area, and part of our group ran into a yellow jack hive. The 3 of them that were together, manged to outrun most of the bees, but the still got stung multiple times, before they could get away. It could have been much worse than it was. We also have encountered bees in the Lake Shasta, at least their was some warning about the hive. I seem to recall that any one that is stung more than 200 times can possibly die from the venom, even though they had not been l to bee venom before the attack.

I had an encounter with little red bumble bees in my back yard. The bumbles had made a nest in a bird house, without my knowing about. I went out to pull some weeds, and one of the bumbles kept coming at me even as I was trying to get away from it. That bumble hunted me down, and stung me on the cheek. It proved to be fatal to the entire hive. We couldn't figure out how to safely move the hive to a better location, without being hurt ourselves.

So bees and wasps, can be a very big danger will out hiking. It is often very difficult to spot a hive, before you get to close to it. Our lives back then became safer, after my dad tore the cartilage in his knee while hiking on our last trip in 1975. My dad then took up boating, and I think that they only had to call a full mayday once. I am still grateful that I missed that trip.
