Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

your Coca looks like the one I call Star. (At my house, chickens only gets names if they are friendly, otherise they are just "the girls'. ) We also have a Buffy the BO.

Our black star we got a couple months ago is super-friendly and curious, she just loves to be held and petted- no wing-flapping when picked up. I took her picture last night when we did the big coop switch. She's just a nice, calm hen.
My black star ("Halle") is really curious and friendly too, and she likes to peck at my legs and toes to get attention. She's the only one that does this, it hurts. I give her a 'peck' on the back and that usually stops her for a while. She's really mouthy and bossy, if one of them is being loud it is almost always her.

My girls and I are enjoying the beautiful spring day

Forgot to tell you all, my Ameraucana Blueberry, a hen that has brooded chicks and layed eggs for two years, crowed this morning.

Three times in a row!

I think she was mostly mad that I was taking care of the chicks before I opened their coop door, but I got her out and then she crowed again in my arms! Darn it all.

So I carried her around for a few minutes, and tried to make her squat for me (to remind her that I am the rooster!) but she just ran away. Here's hoping that's all the crowing we hear from her!

I have a silkie hen that crows. Only does it when she wants something. Usually scratch, sometimes out. It's a really good crow even if it isn't as long and deep as the boys. She was yelling at me this morning begging for the scratch. Got an egg from her yesterday. So even with the roosters around, one of which will make her squat whether she wants to or not, she thinks it's a fine thing to do.

My Chickens and I eat awesome fried chicken from albertsons all the time. I sit out in the yard and we all share. nothing wrong with feeding them meat, they need protein.

On my first batch of chicks I was so crazy with them I was out at night under a light catching moths for them to eat. Let those loose in the brooder and watch those chicks jump. Funny as heck. I also dug worms for them. Yep, it was my first bunch of chicks and I enjoyed them.

Quote: No one has commented on it, but the research I did points to Leukosis(cancer). But I could not find any tumors on her organs, although her ovum was pretty messed up(maybe from all the liquid inside)
Travis - After I woke up to another empty feeder this morning and quite a mess around the brooder, I decided to try the wet feed. I have no idea how much 8 one week old chicks will eat in a day, but I started with a cup of feed. THEY WENT NUTS! I swear all they did for over an hour was chow down on the wet feed. I'm glad I did it! No more hanging feeder for sure, at least until they're too big to jump on the feeder and empty it. They're all completely tuckered out and have been sleeping motionless for over an hour since the new feed mayhem ended.

Currently for my 8 1-2 week old chicks(of course 5 are meat chicks and eat a ton) are getting just about 2-3 cups a day. My two silkie teens get just under 2 cups. The LF(8 adults and 2 chicks) get 6-8 cups daily(depending on if they ate all the day before, free ranging affects how much feed is consumed).

I did the same thing and happy babies. My silkies got into it and what a mess. It sounded like we had construction going on in the house all night from them pecking the side of their container trying to get all the bits of goodness off. Funny. Loved it. Better than therapy and a beer.
