Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Hey, guys...I had to share this one. Hope you find it as funny as I did.

In science, I've been teaching my 6th graders about energy transfer, and we did the traditional "egg fling" experiment using my home-grown eggs. Each group had to devise a contraption to keep their egg from breaking when we threw it onto the cement. The kids did a great job. Out of 10 groups, we only had 2 broken eggs.

When we came in from egg-flinging and were working on the write-up, a kid asked me, "I know they won't, because they've been in the fridge, but if they could hatch, I bet the chicks would be really deformed." I responded that if the eggs hatched, it would be a MIRACLE, because I don't have a rooster. Took the kid a couple minutes to get what I was saying!

These aren't even city slicker kids. You don't get a whole lot more "out in the country" than Morton! Maybe we need a new course of study in science after Spring Break...

Yep. We're a redneck bunch fer sure. We say stuff like "I seen" and "I'm going out town" (which refers to the thriving metropolis of Chehalis), and everyone's car is a "rig" no matter the make or model. Yeah, I've moved uptown to Eatonville, but the 16 years I lived in Mineral done rubbed off.

So, my 6yr old son and I went to my favorite- local feed store and they had 2-3 wk old tie pullets, sexed.... For $4each.... Then, the boy(who has been ambivilant towards chickens so far) BEGGED to get some... He even came up with the perfect place to put them, lol, his room.... Which after hearing them chirp, he decided to sleep on the couch...

We only got 3, and if these go well, I might change my order for 6+wk old pullets, and just go get straight run, but a few more of course... As I don't have a prob processing in-necessary Roos....

I don't know.... I am finally feeling more confident about my ability to handle chicks.... Maybe that is a bad thing... Lol

Here is the current set up-- the house temp is 70, the light is a 125w I am borrowing from Mikeyb ... Food/water are in the back corners... And the light only goes about halfway into the crate, which is 2'x3'

My house is def a lot of stimulation for them....

I have rocks in the water bowl(no marbles here), and might offer them chock grow with water tomorrow.... I've been observing them for about 2hrs, and other than there almost always being at least one making noise, they seem ok....

Any tips/thoughts, ideas or critics???

They look to be 4-5 weeks old. I would maybe move the light a little closer to see if that quiets them up. And you are using a chick waterer, you don't need rock/marbles in those, and don't need them after the first week. The only time I use marbles is in the gallon or bigger waterer and only for the Silkies(seem to fall asleep more). I put a small funnel glued to the top of my chick waterer to keep them off of them.
