Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

As a western Washingtonian I've discovered sand works really well in our chicken run. It is easy to rake the poo out, drains all our rain well and provides good dirt for my hens to bath in. It is much cleaner than all other products I've tried. It is masonry sand which is finer than play sand. I thought play sand too coarse for my hens feet and also to rough to encourage bathing.
I've also found a red light in our coop has become the predator proof I needed to discourage deer from stripping the foliage off our young fruit trees and keep them out of our garden. We have two windows on both sides of our coop the red light acts as predator to the actual predator-raccoon, coyote, deer. I've seen small red electric or battery opporated light/reflectors which are attached to each corner of an area and meant to intimidate predators. My coop red light works really well, so much so that we did not need to put in a fence around the garden or orchard, or add the lights i mentioned. We do have a fenced area for the chickens however.

What bright and pretty colors your kool-aid made KMoran! Isn't it fun to use your own eggs to create intense new colors? I couldn't wait until I had enough multi-colored eggs for Easter and finally last year my nieces and I got together at my parent's home for our annual Easter egg dying. I had seen someone on the Forum using the Wilton gel dyes so decided to use that method, and here is a photo of last year's results. I used blue and blue/green Ameraucana eggs, dark Marans eggs and lots of cream/light brown eggs.
Sadly, none of our kids are home for Easter this year and the adults who are around are just going out for brunch tomorrow with my parents. None of us wanted to cook dinner. Kind of takes the fun out of it when our kids are gone.

No, found her this morning. I got her last egg; it was sitting beside her body. And I have a ton of people wanting on a waiting list for ducklings.

She has been outside all her life and we haven't had a problem.

We had a premeditated murder here last night. Let's all bid farewell to Ducky Doo.

Oh no! What happened to Ducky Doo? What a pretty duck... Okay, I see - an owl.

Will you be incubating her eggs then for those who are waiting for ducklings? Did you save enough to hatch?
I hate losing animals.
What kind of duck was she?

Wow I love those. My kiddos are still young so we try new ways each year to dye the eggs... I just might have to try the gel next year... They are so pretty.

welsh harlequin

I am getting ducklings (more w.h.) from Holderreads in about a month. They are coming with my friends goslings.

I've still got two others that are laying, however, I will have to start locking them up at night.
