Wow. I just found out our close friend Nate was one of the injured in today's avalanches. He's in the hospital for a dislocated shoulder but nothing else! God is good for keeping him so unscathed...he was swept 1200ft at over 50mph!! He has a wife and 3 small children and is the worship leader at our church.

WOW Jess! Sorry to hear about your friend but glad to hear he's gonna be OK!!

We met on the aol garden boards about twenty years ago.

That was a number I came up with but then, wow, my mind rebelled. Even though I know perfectly well we both had grade schoolers back then.

And I was still up to hauling sacks of potting soil around all by my ownself.

Prodigy was still around in 1994? I still am in touch with a few people I met on the garden boards there, but they shook everything up in 1992, I think, and all of us decamped for AOL.

Weak armed / 18 mo old -- those sound like excuses to me

Treated wood only needs to be used where wood touches dirt. 

Chickens are not tall - so you could get by with 2' from floor to ceiling - but -- listen close -- You will want a coop you can either -- Stand up in, OR - reach every nook and cranny from the "human  access portal". 

I have three primary coops - and the one I like the least is the one that is the most difficult for me to clean.  It's too short to stand in, and i cant reach all corners, even with a rake, from the portal.

Heighth of the roost depends a bit on breed of birds - but here's the basic rule. 



Roost needs to be higher than the nesting boxes.   ( put mine about 2' off the floor)

I'm going to take the Hoop House apart and make it half again as tall (6ft ridge rather than 4ft) for just that reason.

OK its officially I have a turkey poult who thinks he/she is a person or a dog... LOL My husband came home from work last night at around 1 am and who was there to greet him... yep you got it the turkey.... my husband said he walked in the door and the turkey woke up peep peep peep and fallowed him all over the house... he put him back with the other turkeys n chicks and this morning what did I wake up to peep peep peep at the side of my bed the cat just looks at me like what the heck... yep same little turkey.... This is the 3rd time hes gotten into my room. He fits under the gap under the door I guess.... crazy turkey!

Well, I AM a Mormon (a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints), so maybe I can help.  We do have young men, young women, and retired couples who go out to serve full time missions, and part of their commitment is to provide service to people and organizations that need help.  Bear in mind they have many other commitments, too, so they probably couldn't build your whole coop, but they might be able to offer a helping hand.  It's worth asking.  A mom with a husband in the military definitely needs a helping hand.  Do please note that our young men missionaries cannot be in a house with just women, nor can our young lady missionaries be in a home with just men.  It's a precautionary thing, you understand.

Thanks for the info Nikki! I wish we had gotten married. Our son and I flew to virgina for thanksgiving to see him graduate and to get married only to have him call off the wedding after I got there :/ he's pretty much out of the picture now.

I think I would mostly need help digging and heavy lifting. It would just be my son and I here during the weekdays and we would stay outside, would that not work? I understand why I couldn't be alone them, but I'm wondering if my son and being outside would change it.

If god is so good, why did he let him get hurt at all?

Glad he's not hurt worse though.
