Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

OK, guess I better go get back to work...
I have been insulating with R-38 in the barn trusses, on the floor & up about 12 feet so far.
Then I went scooting along on my butt & screwed in sheetrock along where the truss meets the floor, which leans IN and so I have to lean backwards to do it since it is not a straight up & down wall.........got me a neck ache from you know where................ouch.
Slivers in the rump too !!!!!!!!!!!!

LOL

that was for the person who said your Java was a horrific example... jerk.... and I had a serama hit the mark on a full size english girl so dont worry about them hitting the mark, they just might surprise you lol. I was just wondering how fast the things would grow for butcher, be a big ol bird I think,

We made it through ok yesterday. Some wind, lots of rain but no power loss here, no tree damage that I am aware of.
The JG are friendly, calm birds. Pick up a chick and they squawk, then settle down immediately when you pet/talk to them. 3 weeks and feathered under their wings already and off the heat lamp. They are robust birds and active.
I really need to get my butt in gear and build them their own coop and run. I am anxious to see the size of eggs these critters lay! They are easily the size of my RIR when they were 5 weeks old just not quite as full feathered though.
I have a double (large) horse stall that I can convert to chicken coops. Perhaps you and others can chime in on plan suggestions? 13 JG + the BlueRoo as a flock.
That looks good Mike! You best a get buildin, if you need a hand have hammer will travel!!!!!!
Thanks for the welcome!

I got this coop from a coop-builder on Craigslist.

It is about 6' long, 4' high, and 32" wide. I think it will hold my four girls pretty well. They will have a free range area of about 40'x40' eventually, but at first I'm going to start them with a dog exercise pen about 8x10 covered in poultry net. And they'll definitely be locked in at night. I have a LOT of predators around me, we are right near a big protected forest... So coyotes, raccoons, hawks, owls, the occasional bobcat, probably more I haven't even thought of... I will let them range to the limits of their and my ability to keep them alive

the four I got are from Baxter Barn in Fall City; it seemed very clean and Cory, the owner, seemed to be really passionate about his chickens. The girls are Salt (white Ameraucana), Pepper (barred Rock), Cocoa (black Austalorp), and Spice (GLW). Here they are in their dog crate, and yes, they've been roosting in it.

Welcome!! The coop and your little peeps look neat and cute.

CUTE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hi Yakima! I'm in Moses Lake, kind of a neighbor. I hope your temps are warmer than ours this morning. I know what you mean about getting sick of changing water for the birds. I'm taking care of turkeys and ducks this year as well as 6 hens. The turkeys and ducks are new to me. Take care!
Welcome
Finally introduced the pup to the chickens! No casualties...

That's One Cute PIC!!! That PUP wants to PLAY
It's been a LONG time since I've posted and haven't been in here much So, I've had many not so lovely things going on here...
One of my Silkie hens ( one of the two confirmed hens out of 6 ) started acting weirder than usual. She loses her balance as if her equilibrium is off. So I separated her, cut her crest a bit too see if she can see and have been monitoring her to make sir she can eat/ drink because I noticed she was too thin. I'm scared to death that she has Merek's, but so far none of the other birds are showing signs. I feel so bad for her and have considered " releasing" her but she is thriving and has gained weight.

After getting tests back from t the naturopathic doc I started seeing it was found that in addition to the celiac diagnosed a few years ago and confirmed recently, I am allergic to dairy and EGGS!!!! SOOOO mad!

Next..On Friday before last, I started mowing the lawn ( riding mower) and almost immediately got " shot" with something in my leg. I yelled bad things them kept going until I put my hand down and felt a bunch of blood and a hole in my thigh. After contemplating getting it looked at I decided to deal with it until a couple days later when I noticed a knot about 4in away from the puncture. Sure enough, the rads showed a piece of metal was imbedded and had to have surgery to get it out. That thing was 3in deep!

Then, to top off the awful last couple weeks, e had a bee swarm come into our house!!! Yes, you read it right! They came in thru a tiny hole where a junction in the roof is developing rot. One moment there was nothing, then there were a hundred bees in a room. Fortunately, they mostly stayed confined to that room. I called a bee guy who came and decided to go get a bait box to see if he could draw them out but by the time he got back most of them had disappeared! We sucked up the rest with the vacuum.

There have been other small annoyances but you get the point! It has not been very pleasant here lately! Gonna try to keep finding good things around to keep me sane and try not to feel picked on!B.t.w, I very much dislike this mobile site! Please excuse the bad typing!
WOW!!!! Hang in there this streak will pass
Sign on the bulletin board at Montesano farm & Feed says a guy looking for a pair of mature Emden...if anyone knows of any for sale, you can call their sales desk & ask a clerk there for the guy's home number.

How is everyone ?????????????
Einstein has filled the 1000 gallon tank right in the driveway, right in front of the house, for now.
Fast....the rain helped.
House/Barn is painted up all pretty & we got the downstairs shower delivered today................
Still waiting for the Bldg inspector to check the R-38 insulation I put in upstairs in the trusses, so then we can run some sheet rock & install the knee wall that runs the length of the barn roof...........4 foot high.
Then we can run wire in the knee wall...but wanted sheet rock behind it first.

Looks like 1 skovie pip...duckles are not due until tomorrow.
It is so weird to hatch something that does not peep !!!!!!!!!!!!!

All is good here just runnin like crazy!! haven't sat at the computer and I'm not a fan of the mobile site. It's hard to post and if I open it it makes me loose my place at home.

Has anyone heard from Dave recently?
Nope I check his profile and he closed up shop when the thread was closed. Let him know that the atmosphere here is all clear and we are building steam again!!!
If anybody has his contact info on a personal level PM me and I'll give you my email to give him I'd really appreciate it.

no such thing as chicken math, it doesnt equate!!!! and MattG lot of english birds get shown anyway, they win and they dont. depends on who is judging, usually if one is dragging the ground with fluff no it wont win, but sometimes. the word now is they want to see some leg from the hock down. some of mine you can, some you cant.

so I still have a dozen, and my girls are laying like mad, 7 eggs a day, selling eggs to if anyone is looking to hatch some more. these are good lines from top breeders/importers.
How much are you getting for the eggs I may ne interested after i get through some others

Hi everyone, I am new to chickens and this site. Glad to see such a strong showing from my state :) any one doing fermented feed?
Welcome! I've been doing FF since about January. I feed Scratch and Peck Layer and Grower (transitioning to Grower plus egg/oyster shell).

This is a Black java Pullet....and I think she is perfect, but there are some who insist she has too short of shanks as you mentioned of your English Orpingtons.
As she grew, she did lengthen her shanks a little, but not much more.
Just sayin'
wink.png
There was one guy (who I greatly dislike) that said it was a horrific example of a Black Java, and looked more like a Black Australorp, or English Orpington !!!!!!!!!!!
Java's are so rare these days I don't think you can be too picky about a little short in the leg. Yes she should be taller but the rest of her looks pretty good. I hope people like that don't discourage people from working on the rare breeds. On popular breeds there's no excuse, but for a rare almost extinct breed to be expected to be the perfect image of the standard?
