Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

that was for the person who said your Java was a horrific example... jerk....

and I had a serama hit the mark on a full size english girl so dont worry about them hitting the mark, they just might surprise you lol. I was just wondering how fast the things would grow for butcher, be a big ol bird I think,

That would be so much fun too !
Let me know if you go for it, it would be very interesting !!!!!!!!!!

:lau

I would need an LF cornish first lol

Blueberry teaches her chicks how to take a dust bath! This is the first time since they were hatched that Blueberry has been able to take a dust bath. One of the babies learned right away! The others just tried to stay out of the way. Towards the end, one of the d'Uccle chicks simply had enough and fell asleep in the middle of everything

Ohhhhh.... I just LOVED watching that!! I like the chick that was trying to copy Blueberry, so cute!!! And the little one that fell asleep, awwhhh....
This is exactly what I needed this moring... I'm so wound up and tense. This is perfect! Thank you for sharing!

Very cute. My finches are going crazy at all the chirping :)

Oh my goodness, I can't handle the cuteness!

Really wish we didn't have to get rid of our rooster, would have loved to let a hen or two go broody and hatch some chicks. We did, however, collect some eggs and handed them off to a good friend with an incubator ... If all goes as planned, we should have some babies wobbling around come Monday!

Thanks for posting that precious video!

Well, first hatch in 5 years is goin well. A friend dropped about 130 OEGB eggs as a trial batch (only about 90 fertile though) and I have 10 Silver Pencilled Rock and one Dorking egg due tonight/tomorrow. My friend only collects eggs once a week so warned they might hatch early...10-11 out as of now.

no such thing as chicken math, it doesnt equate!!!! and MattG lot of english birds get shown anyway, they win and they dont. depends on who is judging, usually if one is dragging the ground with fluff no it wont win, but sometimes. the word now is they want to see some leg from the hock down. some of mine you can, some you cant.

so I still have a dozen, and my girls are laying like mad, 7 eggs a day, selling eggs to if anyone is looking to hatch some more. these are good lines from top breeders/importers.

How much are you getting for the eggs I may ne interested after i get through some others

$50.00 per dozen, usually couple of extras :) $75.00 for 18. if I ship, shipping is 16 as I use a large priority box instead of a medium, they are a buck more to ship

I have done that with shipped eggs that I candle before setting them to check for loose air cells.
With the little LED flashlight, I turn the egg end over to see if the air cells slide.
If so, I write a big X on it.
Then set them all in the incubator, turner turned off for a day of 2 only.
At lockdown, instead of laying the X eggs (if they have made it thus far to lockdown) down on their sides, I set them air cell up in a paper egg carton.
This is believed to help the babies deal with the loose air cell.
So far, it has worked.

Funny thing now...2 of the muskovy duck eggs (were hand delivered to me) and they have air cells right in the middle of the egg.
Never have I seen that !
has anyone seen that before ?
It is not due to injury, but was laid that way.....weird, huh ?
The embryos are developed, and pip is the next 3 days, so hopefully the little boogers find their air !

I have Black Copper Marans and Barnevelders in the incubator and I did not see an air cell in one of the Barnevelder eggs when I was candeling so I thought the egg was infertile. When I looked more carefully trying to see if there was any sign of life I noticed that there is an air cell in the middle of the egg. I drove the eggs less than 10 miles so I wonder how the air cell ended up on the side of the egg. I am curious how it will effect hatching.

Welcome! I've been doing FF since about January. I feed Scratch and Peck Layer and Grower (transitioning to Grower plus egg/oyster shell).

I mixed up some home made chick starter-
3p soft white wheat
3p hard red winter wheat
1p hulled barley
1p oat groats
2p sunflower seeds
1/2p peanuts
1p wheat bran
1p split peas
1p lentils
1p quinoa
1p sesame seeds
1/2p kelp
1/2p millet
I have been lacto-fermenting that and chick starter, so they are getting those with yoghurt and also ACV in the water. I have lentils sprouting also. I am having a hard time finding info on weather I need to use chick starter or if the whole grain feed mix is enough. Any thoughts?

I picked up 5 silkies today (pictures are from the listing and their head feathers are coming in after they were removed from an overcrowded situation) for $20 to go with my 5 free silkies so hopefully I will get some eggs to hatch. We almost finished the nesting boxes today. We just need to decide how to make the roof. The boxes were made from wood left over from other projects so we did not have to buy anything so far except paint. I got the inside and outside painted just in time before it started to sprinkle. We had to put a tarp over them while they are drying and to close the top until we figure out what we are doing with that tomorrow. It would be nice to make a shingled roof but we might have to settle for something cheaper.

So I now have a black hen, a splash hen, a blue hen, a blue rooster, two buff hens, a partridge hen, a red colored rooster with other colored feathers (don't know what to call his color), a white hen, and a white 2nd generation rooster. In two days I have gained 10 silkie chickens for $20 so now I just need them to lay eggs I can hatch. I pulled the white rooster out of the flock because I need to figure out what to do with him. He and the blue rooster were sparring and I decided to move him out to keep the peace since I don't want to use him for breeding anyway. If anyone near Covington knows anything about silkies, I could use some advice about whether I should separate the two roosters with specific colored hens or just keep them all together since the two roosters get along fine.

It depends on your breeding goals. Are you breeding to sell pets or are you breeding to improve to show/breeding standards. If pets, then have them all together, you will get some pretty cool colors. But if breeding for Standards, don't use the White boy. And also breeding non-bearded to bearded will give you thin beards, you would have to breed back to the bearded to improve those qualities. Honestly you have great potential for breeding pet quality birds. You will get the cool colors and you will be able to provide many birds to those who cannot afford show birds and yours will be MUCH better than hatchery quality. Don't read this the wrong way, I am not trying to be harsh, just honest. There are too many dishonest breeders out there giving bad advice just to make a buck.
