Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Even for a single birds, the MaranS has an "S" on the end - it is named from the place in France (Marans) where it comes from.

Wikipedia
Marans is also famous as the home of the Marans chicken. Marans chickens are famous as the layers of the darkest shell color of all chickens. This breed was originally developed in Southwest France between the 12th to the 14th century. The present form of this chicken was refined during the 19th century in the village of Marans. While fairly common in France, this breed is rare in America. Marans chickens lay exceptional eating gourmet eggs that are highly prized by chefs around the world.

I like how the Wikipedia tries to claim their eggs are different than any other chicken. Someone make the stupidity stop.

Entirely possible. I only made the post for an FYI. Many people also get the "Ameraucana" wrong, and they often use the word waddles instead of wattles. I'm just a bit anal when it comes to spelling and grammar, and I just noticed my own faux pas!
I do my own fair share of correcting people, I also think mobile typing/autocorrect is a huge issue and a personal pet peeve ;)

Auto-correct is the devil. Apparently I keep putting eggs in the "hatchet" maybe that's why the last hatch rate was so low!

The old timers often preferred a white leghorn for year round laying. Locals have also had some good results with the Gold Stars bred at Raincreek, they're a first gen. cross between RIRs and RIWhites; my pullet from them has layed 35 days straight, so far. The SFHs are from much further north with extremely short winter days, but is it a cloudy environment like ours? I have a SFH pullet so I'll know more by spring. There are breeds like the Barnevelder developed in Holland which is more like the PNW than most, and then of course jolly old England.... are English Orps good winter layers?

ETA: oops... the SFH breed is from Southern Sweden, not as far north as I'd thought. And the description at Greenfire Farms says they are better layers than Orps. Well, so far mine IS a very productive layer going for 2 weeks or more without a break.

Quote: I haven't seen that claim, only that they are exceptional, which they are. The eggs are different than most eggs, being such a dark chocolatey brown, so they are correct about that. I don't know if they are the darkest egglayer in this country - perhaps they were when that article was written.

If that information is incorrect, perhaps you should join and correct it. I really have a hard time with people who complain about things but aren't willing to do anything about it.

Oh I don't care enough to change it, I just find it amusing. The part about them being "gourmet eggs prized by chefs" implied that they somehow inherently tasted different. I don't have any particular issue with Marans, just found it funny because an egg is an egg is an egg. I understand some people like the different colors and have no issue with that and didn't mean to imply that I did.

I know, color is fun and all, but the only time I taste a difference is when the feed is different. Or jumping to a diff species. Like Turkey eggs. YUM! Or duck. Still not sure what to make of duck eggs. Other than lemon merengue<sp?>

That tears it. I'm attempting my first hatch, and if it doesn't work, I'm blaming the computer!!!

:lau don't tempt me. I'm starting a hatch that has 6 polish, some buckeye del or Brahma crosses, have some Icies and going to get HRIR's ... I could DO that, man! Baking, duck eggs are for baking. So many of my baker friends swear by them. I don't know what makes the difference but they say it makes a noticeable difference especially in breads and cakes.
