Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Well Washingtonians, I have two Black Copper Marans, young cockerels that need homes. Anyone interested before I put them for sale on CL?

I may also have a JG Cockerel too, but not sure. They are all 11 1/2 weeks old.

I've been looking for a Marans pullet for several months now; I can't seem to get just one, nor any females.

I seriously need to get your Splash girls to you- except I don't dare touch the plastic on the hoop house until I've got plastic to replace it and getting them out involves opening part of the roof. I wish there was somewhere local to get greenhouse plastic in rolls, because I've got about eight feet or so left and the stuff that's been rubbing against wire for a year or two is popping like soap bubbles. It needs entirely redesigned so a human can walk in, which I was going to do this summer but reality kept intervening.

My sister is better, for very loose values of better; I'm still running grocery errands for her, and had to go retreive The Nephew at school today (via the apprentices driving) because he was puking again.

And I fear that I will soon go out and spend money I don't have on something I don't need just to keep my personal virtue levels from becoming toxic.

for greenhouse plastic - have you looked at Charley's greenhouse? They are located in Mt. Vernon - but also sell online.  Don't know how their prices compare for you - but I've been happy dealing with them for nursery products, in general - very nice folks.  http://www.charleysgreenhouse.com/

Thanks! That's another one that hasn't shown up on the first three pages of google results, which is when my eyeballs fell out yesterday.

I wish I was rich enough to get a hundred foot roll of double-wall corrugated polyurethane, which other than being over a thousand dollars after you add tax and shipping is JUST what I need.

A week later everyone's still alive, still hatching and I haven't seen anymore bugs.

as an aside- this was the treatment suggested by the WSU research vet for dealing with all parasites on/in chickens. She stated it was best to only use when you actually see the need. But stated that putting a drop or two of is the generic name invermectin ?- liquid used for larger animals. -- on the back of their neck - the birds ingest a small amount from preening and that was sufficient to kill off worms & other parasites.

Has anyone tried (food grade) diatomaceous earth with new chicks? shouldn't hurt them, I would think, and should kill the lice. Other people use Borax, etc. but I know for sure FGDE won't hurt for them to ingest it, even in big amounts.
Good luck!

I use DE when I make up nest boxes and have had nothing but good come of it.

(Clarifications after seeing Matt's objections, and I'd reply to them but can't find the post with my google-strained eyeballs) I mix DE in the first layer of nesting materials, and then put another layer over that so that there's not a lot of loose dust to get kicked around.

Ok guys I kinda have a question . I have a silkie out there on her nest with 2 babies hatched this morning and last I looked 2 more pipped and 2 unpipped eggs. I was out there this morning watching and listening to the chicks and I was tinkering with mammas feathers and I saw what looks to be lice. I was informed that lice will kill the babies and someone told me to treat her and put new bedding and such in there but.... I am afraid tjat she won't lay on her eggs again and won't the powder hurt the new babies? Should I take the babies away and put the eggs in the incubator I am all new to the bugs and the babies :)

I use Ivomec(pour on for cattle) to treat lice/mites on my birds. I put a drop on the back of their necks about every 6 months.  Everyone has been brooding lately so I wasn't too surprised when I saw some lice on one of the bantam hens(been brooding the longest). They were a little late for treatment so I went ahead and did everyone, including my hens that are hatching and one hen that's in the brooder with 30+ babies.  I figure the chicks will be rubbing all over under momma so it'll probably take care of any on them.

The large animal stuff is meant as a pour-on, so it's absorbed through the skin; the point of putting it in the neck-skin is so they can't ingest any. Eprinex, which is a next-generation Ivermectin class parasiticide doesn't have any egg withdrawal period.

(I'm waiting for a timer to bing so I can eat lunch)

This is the way I do it too, would just be extra careful with baby chicks involved.

Eprinex works really well for mites, worms etc. Lice might need a powder solution since they don't feed on blood. Dosage for LF is .5cc, bantams is .25cc.

If you use Ivomec on chickens who are laying, will that affect the eggs at all? Will they be safe for humans? What about dogs?

I was worried about it at first and couldnt find anything online so I asked my mom if her roomates & her still wanted to take the eggs for eating and she did and never had any issues with it so we started using them here at home and nothing has happened to anyone or the animals.

I used to use Sevin Dust but after learning more about it, and it was causing my throat to swell, I quit using it. My old rooster had a constant lice problem, the dust didn't even help(DE too). I put ivomec on his neck and after 1 day the nits were all gone and he looked way better than he ever had. His son had the same issue so i continued using it.

I did use some DE on chicks that were a week old. I brought in some chicks from someone else and they must have had bugs because I ended up with bugs on my baby chicks. I think it did the trick because I have not seen anymore. I did an initial dusting followed by a dusting a week later. I use DE in my coop so the chicks I think brought them in got dusted in the coop and I have not seen any bugs on them. I am hoping the DE is effective since it does seem to work based on my experience using it. It did not cause any harm to the chicks I dusted with it while I never would have used chemicals in my home where my brooder is located (I have a bird room now). It creeped me out to see bugs on my chicks but fortunately it was easy to remedy. I am not even sure what they were, lice or mites, because I killed the ones I saw so quickly.

I have not tried Ivermectin on chickens but when my older daughter was young, she got lice from a kid at school. Because her hair is blonde, I did not see the nits in her hair and my whole family ended up with lice. I combed nits out of our long hair and tried the shampoos repeatedly (along with cleaning everything in the house) but we could not get rid of them. My doctor suggested we take the injectible Ivermectin orally so I got a syringe of it from the vet (stating it was for my foal) and we took it orally. That did the trick and it did not cause us any harm. I think the amount transferred from the back of a chicken's nect to the egg she lays would be far less than the oral dosage we took for lice so I would not worry about eating the eggs. Having had lice myself, I feel for birds or animals with bugs on them so I try to prevent an infestation before it happens.

I watched a "monsters inside me" episode where a man had some kind of parasites that were damaging his vision and nothing could kill them, he ended up being the first person in the US to be treated with Ivermectin. It killed the parasites and he was healthy still some years after.

Hey neighbors, I am going to post here about this in hopes that someone might be able & willing to help this guy. He was recently dumped on our road and has been petrified of everyone that's tried to catch him. Well, today we were able to get him to come to us and as soon as he could, he jumped into the car.

He looks to be some type of bully breed mix, maybe bull dog(not the little kind), Not fixed, he's all chocolate/liver with a small white patch on his chest. He has some kind of skin allergy going on but it's calmed down a lot since we gave him an oatmeal bath and good scrubbing. He's very affectionate, want to be right with you all the time, great with the baby & has obviously been around them before. He sniffs the cats then ignores them, is submissive with any other dogs he's been around so far but wants to play SO bad! He does have some separation anxiety when left outside or when he was left outside of the coop(have a video of that time!) he met the chickens and was slightly frightened of them but didn't act interested in them or bother them while off leash in the coop(supervised). He knows some basic commands and LOVES going in the car. he mouthed a toy but wasn't really into chewing it, just wanted to lay with it. That's about all I know about him so far.

I am not able to keep him or foster him because im currently caring for my grandmother who is going through cancer treatment and we also have a male dog aggressive dog at home. I e-mailed a rescue earlier today but they had no fosters available but asked if i could foster if they took care of vet & food expenses. If someones interested I can send you their direction for more questions.

Here's a few pictures,Coop video is available by text but i have another on my facebook(i will try to add here though). He's a VERY sweet dog,his previous owners probably just didnt understand what was wrong with him or didn't want to spend money on fixing the problem :(

Looking at his teeth he still looks like a baby.
