I use sand and love it as long as it stays pretty dry. When you mix cackle spackle, sand, and water you get nasty smelling muck that turns to cackle cement. I'd suggest getting the coarsest sand available. I get it from a pit in our pickup truck. Very economical.
Of my four girls, one is molting so not laying, another just got her broody broken so not laying again yet. The other two are doing fine... a Swedish Flower Hen and a Red Sex Link that just layed 51 days straight! woo hoo!!! The SFH is running a close second!
I give mine light so they stay at about 14 hrs / day. This year I might back off that for a month or so, I haven't decided yet. If more start molting and stop laying I will for sure.
