I use sand and love it as long as it stays pretty dry. When you mix cackle spackle, sand, and water you get nasty smelling muck that turns to cackle cement. I'd suggest getting the coarsest sand available. I get it from a pit in our pickup truck. Very economical.

Of my four girls, one is molting so not laying, another just got her broody broken so not laying again yet. The other two are doing fine... a Swedish Flower Hen and a Red Sex Link that just layed 51 days straight! woo hoo!!! The SFH is running a close second!

I give mine light so they stay at about 14 hrs / day. This year I might back off that for a month or so, I haven't decided yet. If more start molting and stop laying I will for sure.

Other than a good story I hate mysteries! So Sorry to hear about your losses. If the ducks are crushing them would you see signs like a broken neck? How old are they?
If you separate them from the ducks until they are older maybe it would help. Just throwing out thoughts obviously.

Well, it's kinda hard to say because they are stiff when we find them (rigor). We have poultry netting, electric, but they manage to fly over or get under it, or just go right through it. So we only use it to separate them from the goats. I'm hoping that now they are getting bigger, they will stop dying. They were on medicated feed as babies, so it shouldn't be cocci, and the last necropsy we had done was negative for MG, Newcastle's and Salmonella. Just keeping fingers crossed for the rest of them.

So the screening came up empty, and they couldn't suggest anything either? W-eird. <thinking cap on...>

How old are the chicks? I had my Muscovy raise some chick and some started dying as well....turns out at night she would shift and one would get under her foot and get killed. I moved her out and no more deaths.

Keep the ducks away from the chicks for a week and see if the deaths stop.

I thought I had all my girls sold but had a couple CL people flake out. So if anyone is interested I have 2 EE hens for sale. $15 each. They were hatched in late Jan-early Feb. One of them is still laying(pink egg) but the other hasn't since the windy storm the other night.

I also have not yet put a light in the coop for them so im sure that's part of it, been getting dark SO dang early!

These are over 3 months old, so I don't think that's the problem. Plus, they don't sleep together at night.

Hi Washingtonians,

Here I am in King County!

I am interested in purchasing two chickens, do you sell chicks, chickens, or fertile eggs? I am looking for an Ameraucana and a Jersey Giant. Please let me know what colors you have available. I am open to age, all of my hens are 7 months and younger, I do have a couple broody hens I can put babies under (along with a heat lamp). ANYONE HAVE A referral to where to go?

Thanks,
Cherish

Chickielady has Jersey Giants. Rainwolf has Ameraucanas. If you'd like, I can ask Rainwolf what she has available (she hasn't been on BYC for a while).
