Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Driving from Olympia to Shelton last night, 101 was really bad. Ice under snow, lots of vehicles in the median. On the opposite side there were at least 3 wrecks with state patrol and/or emergency services on the scene. At Taylortown there was a Mustang stopped in the left lane with right turn signal on, apparently trying to get across the right lane to turn onto Lynch road. Instead of passing them on the right I stopped so they could make their turn and get off the highway but they just sat there tires spinning. And there is no gradient there to speak of, that's how little traction there was. Hope everyone made it home ok.

we did this as a a lab experiment in high school and I've observed this in my freezer with ice cube trays. I'm talking about freezing solid, not just on top. Your kiddie pool is not freezing solid in half an hour or even in 3 hours. The denser colder water will sink, leaving the warmer water on the surface to freeze. So if you want to prevent _surface_ freezing using the least amount of energy you are better off with a pump to keep the water mixed than a heater, at least around here where we don't have extended single digit temps.

I'm not emptying and refilling my kiddypool over and over it's still frozen solid. If you try to remove ice from a kiddy pool you'd shatter the pool. They are using a metal dog dish for right now to drink from because there is no use with the kiddy pool at this point.
and still when i used cold water in the dish outside it froze right away to where they could not drink it. Which is what matters to me is if they can drink it or not. The hot water did not freeze for up to 3 hours.
I don't care which freezes to solid first as that really doesn't matter at all. It doesn't do any good for them to have ice over the top and not be able to get to the water now does it?

I am thinking today of putting a coffee can on top of the pool and building a little fire in it to melt some of the ice so i can try to put a fish tank heater in there. However i don't know if it will do much good with it being frozen right now.

I personally wouldnt go the fire route. I posted a link for a floating deicer. If you need to get into the ice to insert w/e heater you have try pouring hot water from a coffee pot or a pitcher. IF you pour into the same spot it will etch a hole for ya. Right now water is only frozen about 3" thick in my kiddy pond so It shouldnt take much at all as I broke the ice with a gloved fist.

Maybe your kiddy pool is bigger then mine? Mine also sits on cement not sure if that could cause it to freeze solid faster. But mine is froze all the way through, I tried to use an ax to break through but it cracked the ice to the bottom and no water.
Right now the snow on top is starting to melt so not to worried anymore.
i will however have to get something for next year.

Hi - I'm a new member and just wanted to say hi on the Washington thread! Any Seattle area hen homes on here?

I'm down south of Issaquah, in Maple Valley-ish

How is everyones flocks holding up in this weather? Mine is doing okay, i keep giving them warm water throughout the day to help warm their bodies. They are eating a lot of food. I did some sugary candies in the yard which attracted lots of ants for them to eat :)

Anyone here have ideas to keep the ducks pond thawed? It's a kiddy pool. using a fish tank heater would melt it and is honestly dangerous (glass and ducks bad), I don't know what to do with it. It's solid ice. Right now they have a large dog dish i keep knocking the ice out of to refill with warm water it's deep enough (for a few minutes anyway) for them to dip their heads in.

you could use a couple heat mats under the pool, and keep it shallow, or use the cookie-tin water warmers that have 40 watt bulbs in them- and use a smaller pan like a sink-size dish pan?
The only other thing is a livestock tank heater, and then you need a big 'ol metal or Rubbermaid livestock tank to put it in.

I'm super excited that I got all of my Bielefelder hatching eggs and the remaining hatchlings sold this weekend. What a relief. I can't imagine holding my son's Sea Shepherd fundraiser this coming weekend --with incubators running in every room and brooders of chicks in here and 40 people running around.

Now, to hang the nets, clear out the rest of the junk that's been piling up in the living room to 'sort for later" (eyes rolling- as if I could actually get that done this month?). I need a few extra hands, ya know the feeling?

Here's the last 6-pack of BF chicks that moved on this weekend.....
