Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Hello all! I'm new to this site and a newer to raising chickens. I have made it through my first year with my girls. I love them so! I live in the spanaway graham area and wonder if anyone knows what breeds of chicks the local feed stores are getting in and when? I'm looking to expand my flock already and very excited for new babies!

Have any of you folks used the Brinsea EcoGlow 30 or 50? Good or bad?
What about chicks hopping on the top of it?
Ease of cleaning?

I use Ecoglow 20's exclusively now. They work great. The chicks will jump on top. Clean easily either daily wipe with wet rag or scrape off between batches. Either way seems to work fine. I love them. Pay for themselves in energy savings and the chicks seem to thrive with it. I also like since it's a no light option I can control the photo period of the birds.

I have a new 20 waiting for hatch day next week. The heat lamp is just too risky. One thing I noticed is the manufacturer name is inscribed into the top surface which won't help cleaning it. I may put something on top to block it off.

Welcome! I don't know about your area specifically but my local Dels and Ace usually get RIRs, EEs ("Americaunas"), Orps, Austalorps, Cornish X, Wyandottes.

This next hour will be the longest hour of my life. The post office called said to come get my package anytime during their normal business hours. They actually open at 830 but going to leave here at 8 and go in right as they open the doors.
My chicks have arrived. they called me at 6 am to tell me this waking me up.

If possible you might want to consider buying chicks from local breeders rather than feed stores. If you tell us which breeds you're looking for we can probably point you in the right direction. Generally speaking there are a couple of reasons for doing this.

- Many of us have found that birds from the puppy mill style hatcheries sold at feed stores tend to have more health issues when they hit 18 - 24 months of age. It's very stressful for us owners, especially if you're emotionally attached to them.
- Good breeders are usually more concerned about the overall quality of the birds and breed to meet the breed standards, called SOP.
- Local chicks are generally treated in a move humane fashion than those stuffed in boxes and shipped across multiple states.

The poultry show in Monroe on March 15 will have chicks being sold by the participating breeders. The show is free and a lot of fun, and it's a good place to learn more about the breeds and breeders.

Does anyone know if there will be hatching eggs available for sale also? What time does the show start?

Thanks!

Lutefisk, Have you candled your eggs from Erhard, how do they look?  I know fertility was a question mark.

I bought 2 dozen, he threw in 3 extra which we ended up eating since they wouldn't fit in the incubator. Those were fertile.
Out of the 24 set I've had 3 apparent non starters, one quit in the second week and another questionable that I haven't given up on yet. So 24 confirmed fertile out of 27.
