Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

I just realized I may be up to my eyeballs in chicks soon. If all eggs under the broodies now hatch in two weeks, will be at 24 chicks under a month old. Then there are the 5 month and a half old silkie chicks out there. 3 of the chicks I did buy to put under the broody who only had 3 hatch. Those three are supposed to be sexed female brown layers. So hopefully I get half of my hatched chicks as females. Replacing almost all of my old EEs this year.

Do you have a picture of your Barnevelder?  I just love them...they are my favorite breed in fact!

Well turns out shes not a barnevelder lol. Shes an ameracauna or something.. shes in that pic behind the lav orpington. I guess none of my birds are what I thought they were haha.

I'm so sorry. It sucks that you get birds that you're excited about the breeds, then someone takes advantage and passes off something else. It's bad enough with most of the hatchery birds just resembling the breeds they are supposed to be. It's as bad as the hatcheries naming their easter eggers as ameraucanas or araucanas.

The important thing is if you like your birds. I have an adorable easter egger that likes to snuggle and ride around with me that I'd never get rid of. She'll get to live out her life as a pet. She got rewarded with a name. I very rarely name a bird. Named ones are pets.

Hi Again, she's an Easter Egger, definitely not an Ameraucana. People get those two mixed up all the time especially feed stores and commercial hatcheries. But you're definitely in the right place to learn more. You've probably noticed we are VERY free with our "knowledge" here!

But seriously, PipsnPeeps is the go-to gal for anything Ameraucana!

And if you want to talk Barnevelder, DiamondDust is a very good source, too. If you really want a Barnie we can hook you up with at least 2 good sources in W. Washington.

I ordered Blue Copper eggs and he sent Black Copper eggs that had Blue Copper hens but I specifically ordered Blue Copper....3 eggs hatched.....,two wereBlack Copper hens that were super mossy and the roo was Black Copper and the roo had tons of copper on his chest so all went bye-bye......The Legbar was a roo and super colorful so he went bye bye as well

Just out of curiosity... what has your hatch rate been with Helen Byers Marans? I know you've ordered eggs from her a couple of times at least.

And the Fertility Rate?

Can someone explain the difference between the two to me and why hatcheries and feed stores get them mixed up? (I assume the feed stores just call them whatever the hatcheries tell them to.) My friend said she has an Ameraucana she loves that gives her these pretty light green/teal colored eggs. Most/all of the breeds I wanted to have are layers of light brown colored eggs, so I decided to get an Ameraucana to add a little color to my eggs (plan to get her in the next week or two). Specifically there was a Splash Ameraucana I thought looked really cool (see picture I found online of one below). But wasn't sure how to determine that coloring from the chicks, so I figured I'd get what I'd get and whatever she looked like, she'd give me a different color egg other than light brown and that would be cool (I've seen posts about blue, teal & pink colored eggs - I'd be done for any of those colors). Now I am hearing all these wonderful things about EEs. None of the feed stores Around me list anything as an EE. Wondering if their Ameraucanas could really be EEs and if there was a way to tell. After seeing some pictures of EEs they tend to look pretty neat too, but there is such a wide variety who knows what I would get. Again, I'm really after adding some color to my eggs. And they chicken needs to be friendly when older, and, while some breeds say they are better in that area, there really is no guarantee of that either.

Edited to add the picture:

Baby chicks finally are starting to hatch! We have Black Copper Marans, Blue Marans, Birchen Marans and Swedish Flower hens.....love the sound of the chicks peeping......anyone want to add some chicks to their flock, contact me....we are located in Carnation
Pretty sure my hubby would kill me! Although you are in the same area as me, maybe I could tell him that I *found* the chicks in the yard and *rescued* them... Sent from my SGH-T999 using Tapatalk

You will not find an Ameraucana at a feed store. All of them are nothing more than Easter Eggers.

Ameraucanas have a specific body type, beard, muffs and come in recognized color patterns.

Easter Eggers are just a mutt that lays colored eggs, they can be any shape color or size.

You're right that feed stores just call them what hatcheries call them. Hatcheries mislabel them because they just don't care.
