Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Their's are much darker and look for all the world to be auto sexing as well, like a double barred bird...like Silver Cuckoos are.
Not gray, but black & yellow and one sex much lighter...they must have silver in them, don't you think ?
Course none of this helps her figure out what breed she has, all in all they probably are White Rocks, by shear popularity of the breed (Rocks)
As Illia has said many times, Almost all breeds developed in the USA (today) are bred off the backs of the Plymouth Rock...

That's because their picture is one white and one black. As to why they did that? No clue. I'd show a darker one but don't have any day olds in that color.

Not sure on the Everything being bred off a Rock thing, maybe commercial fowl and hatchery stock, but the Rock was such a late comer not that many breeds have it in their makeup.

Wow! you guys and gals really know your birds! I just joined today so see my post under new members (redswanwest). I can never figure them out unless they are adults. I can tell I will be reading a lot and getting lots of info. I'm located in Centralia, Wa. Kat

Yep. Most of the folks here know their stuff. Myself, I'm a noob still also. But boy is it fun learning!

Hi, There is another source of poultry at the coal creek poultry auction in Chehalis. It is on coal creek Rd. 98532 (google it) They usually have 300-400 birds on Saturday (11:00) I was there today and there were over 400 chicks for sale. price 1.00 to 2.50. all types of breeds Lots of young layers and pullets. I have bought many birds over the last 3 years with good results. They also have plants, equipment, and rabbits. It's great for learning more about the breeds and net working with others that raise various poultry. We go to look and for entertainment also. check it out when you have some spare time Kat

Too stocky to be leghorns, especially hatchery leghorns. I'd agree with the above comment from Chickielady about them being the same breed. I would imagine they're White Plymouth Rocks, they can on occasion have the grey down color.
i'm not as knowledgeable as those who have been speaking but have visited quite a few feeds stores posting flyers for another project and what is really common has been the cornish broiler crosses. You don't see many obscure breeds unless they are pre-ordered. All feed stores should have a list of what they ordered and what hatchery they came from.
Best of Luck

This is turning into quite the mystery !

I think those three are Jersey Giants. I'll post new pictures of them. Every morning we wake up and they have grown!

On a side note do Turkeys figure in when chicken math is at work? When we got chickens I thought six would be good, husband thought 12 so we compromised on 20

Then yesterday I came home from a service project and found four baby turkeys in our recently vacated brooder!

At this time of year Turkeys do indeed multiply like chicken math, and so do ducks & geese !

I had 10 more babies hatch last night...chicken math is hard at work here !

Then set 6 more crested pekin eggs in lock down, so ducky math is adding up as well......and now I am ordering more hatching eggs from someone else !
When DH gets home from his trip, there may be thousands of poultry here !

I am getting tired of ducks already, messy muddy critters.
I moved them to another pen with better drainage, and hooked their tub up so it collects rain water 24/7, and so it stays somewhat clean.

May 5th we get our meaties...they are going in a coop of their own, with pasture grass.
All birds here are getting moved around like musical coops to prepare for the new birds.

Other than that, I have been cleaning incubators & brooders all morning & my back is killing me, got a big knot spasmed in the right waist area...Ouch, so took some anti-spasmotics & ibuprofen...guess I better take it easy today.
Hurts like the dickens, I almost got stuck bending over to load the dishwasher......................
Ouch !

Better pictures of my mystery chicks (maybe Jersey Giants?) We were told they were Barred Rock but, unless I'm missing something these are not BR chicks!
