Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

I want to say :welcome  to all of the new people I've missed the last several days.

Just been really busy here.

I found out what is wrong with my foot, and that I need to have surgery on it. I have a weird bone growth on the top of both feet. The right side is just much bigger than the left and putting pressure on the nerve. Anti-inflammatories have helped. I'm not allowed to wear Birkkenstock type sandals anymore after 30+ years of wearing them for at least half of the year. Also have degenerative arthritis in that foot above the arch. Fun fun stuff.

Geez that' sounds really rotten! You're way too young for all of that. I hope it goes well and you heal up really fast!

Hello everyone! We are moving up to Duvall, WA this month. I was wondering if anyone knew of a 4H group in that area. I found one (I think) but no contact information, and thought there was a small chance someone on here might know. Thanks so much.

If there are any neighbors with information on the area or who just want to say hi, I would love that!

I live in Carnation which is right down the road from Duvall. What type of 4H...I can point you the right direction

I live near Duvall too. I am there all the time to pick up feed at Rocking E feed. Even though Duvall is in King County, you want to find a Snohomish County 4H group. Fair is 15 minutes up the road that way! Good luck with your move.

Had an interesting conversation with my vet this weekend. Long story - short - I was there with my dog but needed a chicken fecal done to check for worms ( my vet doesn't "do" chickens but he has personally had them in the past and plans on getting more).

When we were discussing symptoms ( reason for the fecal) he said that he is hearing of a lot of cases of cocci this year in laying/backyard flocks. Has anyone else experienced or heard this? It honestly never crossed my mind that cocci was a problem up here - I thought it was more of an issue in hot/humid environments

My 3 old hatchery girls are struggling this year ( hence why I am only doing heritage birds now).

I'll let you all know what the test results are.

Good news - no worms
Bad news - large load of cocci - started Corid tonight

Sitting here having my morning coffee. Chicks and mama are still in their little coop. And I saw a flash of someone big, grey, and avian swoop directly over the coop where the babies are. I'm guessing owl? Whoever it was, they flew at fence-top level, say 5 feet? And in a straight gliding and level flight.
So today I think I'll make sure there's some hidey holes for mom and babies in their nursery yard.
I like owls and all, but I'm more inclined to let them eat the rats in the far back yard. As a matter of fact, the owls can have all the rats they like! Gratis! ;)
Could be, owls seem to be seasonal around my area (Arlington / Marysville), have heard doves but not owls yet….but there are several types of big and small hawks and i had a bald eagle have lunch at my expense the other day…wish i had a camera….since the hen was already gone i watched rather than chase it away, it was beautiful. Flew off when it saw me….huge….

What kind of Corrid ?

You do realize that "Corid" is but a user name for the drug Amprolium ....Right ?
Amprolium comes in "Medicated" feed.
The idea is to get chickens effectually exposed to cocci parasites.
Their immunal system needs to KNOW what the parasites are, and how to live with them.
I never use "Medicated" chick starter.
I DO use Corrid.
Both "medicated chick feed and 'Corrid' are AMPROLIUM.
It has been an experience in the recent past that some peeps, give their chicks BOTH, both medicated water with CORRid and mediacted chick feed (which is medicated with AMPROLIUM)

In doing so you will over medicate & kill your chicks.

Corris done properly, and your birds will never have an issue again.
You need to expose your birds (babies too) to the world, with clean water & feed, and a few days later, give them Corrid in their water.
On & off, for 6-7 weeks of age.
Mine go about 2 months.
Then their immunal systems are up to the world, and all is OK.
It is a hassel, mixing a special jug of corris water for my chicks, and another for my growing on birds, but it is necessary.
And never will you ever have an issue with cocci again.
One thing you all need to realize is Cocci are in the soil, forever.
You cannot get away from it...and it has no bearring on wether one is agood poultry keeper or not.

Here is the big point :
Doing a necropsy of a bird or a poop sample is going to see cocci.
Of course !
It is in the dirt, it is in the bird.
YES every sample will say there is Cocci in one form or another.

YES even one of my best healthiest hens, will show COCCI.
The point is, wether your bird has developed immunal antibodies to this parasite...have they >
This is why I do 1 week ON & 1 week OFF Corrid.
Submit the immanal system to the parasite & IT WILL develope antibodies against it.
This is the best defense against why I hate medicated chick feed...after months of raising
a chick, you suddenly put them on regular chicken feed, and they have NO DEFENSE against COCCI.
Even at 2-3 months of age.
Their immunal systems cannot build up against a parasite or disease if you have the birds on antibiotics.
My opinion..my experience.

Just remember what I say here:

If I had a hen die, and did a necropsy :

YES she would have COCCI bacteria in her. BUTT it would not bother her as she has built up immunal systems to deal with it.
OK ?
Do you understand ?
