Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

It looks like the coyotes have become rather cozy with our neighborhood since the chickens moved in. In five years here I had not seen a single coyote. In the last two months there have been five sightings at my house plus another half dozen from the neighbor's yard. Another neighbor lost several of her ducks. It seems they have no fear of humans, hooved livestock or large dogs. Today one was scoping out the barn at 11:00 in the morning. The chickens are not even safe during the daytime. Time to build a run for the chickens, which is not what we had planned. However, I think the chickens would prefer to be confined than dead. We'll only be able to let them out in the afternoons when we are home from work.

Next to host: Christina volunteered to host.

And this morning, we are still at it !

We enjoyed ourselves. It's to bad we had to leave early.

I need to get a kennel and house set up outside for the dogs. Then we need a camper. We do have a tent, though.

Since you got them at the auction I would assume they are roosters because people dump roosters at the auction knowing they will be eaten primarily. I have sold Silkie and Orpington roosters at the auction on occasion when I can't get them into breeding programs or they are not breeder quality (color leakage on the Silkie roosters) but I would never take a hen or pullet to the auction. I would never buy anything at the auction either unless I were going to kill it. Most of what gets purchased at the auctions go to meat buyers who kill the same day or resell to others who will kill them. I used to drive for the biggest buyer at the Enumclaw auction so I know what happens to birds sold at the auction. The risk of disease is too great for me to even want to stay for the sale if I do take roosters but I sat through the sale not long ago to watch my roosters bring top dollar from a meat buyer. I have two buck bunnies I considered taking but I am sure they will sell as "fryers" even though they are pets so I would rather give them away than take them to the auction.
