Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Just made a no-waste bucket feeder! It took me forever because I didn't have any of the tools required but I'm excited for the girls to give it a whirl!

Oooh, I like this! Good work. Did you affix the pipe inside with something, or did you just wedge it in there really well?

Thanks! No fixative, just wedges in really tight. I'm excited to try it out! Well, for the girls to anyway ;) I need to add another feeder port though this evening when I have time.

I just followed the directions on the first page of the thread below. Super easy and has pics! I got the camo bucket at the Snohomish Home Depot, but any bucket would work. Lots of folk use kitty litter buckets or bakery frosting buckets or old plastic garbage cans. One even used a large rubbermaid tote and put 8 feed ports in it! I couldn't get the hole saw to work for me so I just used an exact knife.

I love this design and made a small one. Later saw a YouTube video where the guy used a small wood block inside the bucket to stabilize the elbow. He attached the block to the outside of the elbow, inside the bucket with a short screw. Then put the elbow in place and screwed into the wood block from the outside bottom of the bucket. The elbow was snugly in place without worrying about it shifting about like mine does.

So I figured out lady gaga's issue... She's broody. I looked her over and didn't see anything wrong but she kept growling at me. So I let her be and she made a nest in the box I had her set in and continued to be all ticked off till I put eggs in there. She's never been broody so we'll see. It's already dark here but I figure I'd better take a closer look at the stump I found her on the other night and check for eggs. Silly chicken. Doesn't she know it's COLD outside?

Here she is in the garage in a dog kennel in her make shift nest box.

My chicken was acting weird today laying underneath her nest and coop and I would try picking her up and would refuse but eventually she did. Then saw her again but I put her inside the nest box but came out, then did not see her went to check nest box and came out later she layed her egg. Was it a bit harder since it's cold? Could she be getting close to being broody? I kind of want baby chickens specially from my birchen maran. Could they hatch them even though it's this cold.

They certainly can hatch even in this weather. I let my wonderful little mixed Ameraucana hen brood over 6 eggs last December. She successfully hatched 3 out of 6 eggs and did a wonderful job raising them. I did put a heat lamp out there for the babies incase they fell out of the nest box and couldn't figure out how to get back up right away - it was below freezing at that time.

Wow that would be nice if she did go broody. I think it was a bit too cold I could hear her pushing like something stuck in her nose. Stuffed? Hopefully passes by but she was eating ranging and layed her egg.

Well this morning was a doozy! I was locked in the run, in my pjs, for about 25 minutes!
The twine I ran from the inside to the latch outside just snapped, leaving me locked inside. No cell phone, no gloves, an my nearest neighbor just moved so no yelling for help when she let the horses out.

I built the sucker like a prison cell and there was no way out. Luckily I could reach a few twigs on the roof and used those to undo the latch.
Guess I'll be figuring out a better system while I warm up!
